Specialties NP

Just curious what field everybody went into after graduation? I am a FNP and work in physical medicine which is sort of like integrative medicine. I'm interested in pursuing forensic nursing or alternative medicine for the future. However, I'm beginning to miss family practice. I'm torn.

So what area do you specialize in? What was your degree in?

Specializes in Med/Surg, Neuro, ICU, travel RN, Psych.

I'm not in school for it yet, I'm finishing up my BSN and getting ready to apply. But I will be doing psychiatric NP.

Went to PACU as a new grad, then to a few decades in critical care, then to a couple of decades in case management, then legal nurse consulting and life care planning. Working for myself beats it all hollow. Why do you ask?

Curious to see what path everyone took after graduate school. We FNPs in my class were groomed to work specifically in a family practice or remote clinic and I didn't take that road. I specialized and sort of wonder if I would be more utilized in FP. I've forgotten a lot of my education and take to reading study materials just to keep my knowledge up.

Specializes in Neurosurgery, critical care.

I started in the OR on CV/Neuro team. Worked there for a little over a year and moved to the SICU for enhanced experience in medicine/trauma/skills. Graduated in August, took ANCC FNP earlier this month and passed! I have been working for a neurosurgeon for about 2 months now. I love what I do. About 1 year ago I sat and achieved my CNRN (certified neuroscience registered nurse). Do what you are passionate about! Do no "settle" and make do. Hope this helps

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

I'm an FNP who currently works in an Allergy/Asthma practice. I worked in primary care for a few years, and I got burned out being all things to everyone. My background before nursing was in Immunology, so my current position is a great fit for me.

Goofeegirl-I'm fascinated by physical/functional medicine. How did you get into this? Did you have to do additional training or did you learn on the job?

I lucked out with the first job by simply applying and getting chosen from the other applicants to be the NP for the practice. I learned trigger points and joint injections one weekend and only performed 5 that Sunday. The following Monday I went into work and performed 29 injections before lunch. I just jumped in and did the job. Now I've done thousands of injections and continue to learn by going to conferences learning as much as I can about the field.

I'm being considered for a job in Neurology/Sleep Medicine which fits my past experience. I would love to sit for the CNRN certification and learn more about this field. Ah, so many possibilities with this degree...
