What's going to keep you motivated????

I start CRNA school this August at ODU and I know it's going to be all that everyone says and more, but what is the one thing that will keep you motivated when the going gets tougher than tough. I have a pitcure of a nice big house that I want with the mega master bedroom and bath, the big body benz...and vacations in the carribean, and college fund for my kids, shopping, shopping, and shopping....you all get the pitcure right? Oh yeah, and autonomy and no more but wiping or denture cleaning! What's the one thing for you that will make it all worth it?:roll

Alot of interesting a varied rationale for moving on towards / achieving CRNA, some of which I can relate towards, and others not so much.

Lets talk about the money. Yes, I will be the first to admit that making 100-120k right out of school is attractive, as well as the trend of increased income over time.

However, that is not the sole reason, or even close to being a significant factor in my choice to finish my BSN, then onwards to CRNA school.

Why? Autonomy. The chance to really begin to apply knowledge from many, many moons of others before me to my patients. Knowlege, the satisfaction of pushing to be in the upper echolons of "Professional nursing", and making it there. Or, as I told a husband/wife anesthestist team here for the cardiac program, "I like the idea of being able to stop, start, slow down, or in general mess with any part of the body process, and recover them from that"

For me, I would want to (and would absolutly continue down this path) do this even if I only would go up to 60-70K per year. Why? Personal AND professional satisfaction. Thats what drives me then, now, and in the future. I want to be in that upper echolon of nursing, and in 1.5 years, I will be in a program for CRNA. Arrogent? Egotistical? No, determined. Nothing more, nothing less. I want to be on that edge of medicine.

Similiar as I was taught in the combat medic program. This quote from one of our primary instructors. "look to the left, and to the right of you. Odds are you will not be seeing them at the end of the road. Only the ones that want this bad enough, and are willing to bleed enough will be the ones to complete this. The choice is yours."

All these factors drive me, and will continue to do so. Money.. yea.. not so much. Nice to have? Yes. Over personal / professional achievement? God No.. Good luck with the money hoarding. For me personally, I would not want to have a similar outlook / drive that others have posted in these topic.

i will honestly tell you that i would be a CRNA for regular nurse pay - it is that great...

Same here.

30andconfused, I am not sure why you would begrudge someone compensation for what they do. Sure, CRNAs make six figures...but so can non-CRNAs. As I am sure other CRNAs (and SRNAs) do, I often get tired of explaining why we earn so much. Believe me, if the job we do wasn't so important, do you really think we would receive that much money for it? People get so caught up in the "nurses care" crap - just because we care doesn't mean that we should not get paid for the critical thinking/skills/knowledge involved (which are quite substantial - much more so than in the ICU or any other area of entry-level nursing). I am NOT knocking non-APNs...just stating that the knowledge is different, and at times, a bit more critical.

Oh Gawd! Thats such BS! Why dont you become a cop or a peace core volunteer if you want a "wonderful opportunity?" Its so funny that your "blessing" and your "dream" includes making 160k+ a year. You guys kill me...:roll

That was rude.

What is your basic problem with this forum?

I dont have a problem with the forum. I have a problem with people sugar coating their motives. All of you talking about you'd do this for regluar nurses pay can purchase this bridge in NY I have for sale. You can be an AA for 40k a year, yet you choose CRNA because thats where the Bucks are!

Just like the movie Perfect Storm "Hey skip why are we going to the Flemish Cap?" "Cuz that's where the fish are!"

I love this forum and would never disrespect it. I just feel people are not being truthful and hiding their motives with fallacious philanthropy. Its okay to want top dollar for your skill. Its okay not to want to scoop poop to get there. Why am I the forum bad guy?

Just out of curiosity, do you know what an AA does? Seriously, by your post, it is evident that you do not.

First of all, you don't know what an AA is. An AA is an anesthesia assistant. They do not make 40K a year. You are thinking of an Anesthesia Technician. They help maintain equipment, stock rooms, service machines, etc. They do not provide anesthesia.

An anesthesia assistant does provide anesthesia, but has limitations on their practice. That is why I chose nurse anesthesia instead. So that I can be an independent practitioner when I choose. I would get your story straight before you go throwing around assumptions about people and their motives. You have made it blatantly clear that YOU personally are motivated by money. Not all of us consider that to be the primary attraction to anesthesia.

Err, maybe its me but the words anesthesia assistant both begin with AA..DUH. And they make peanuts, which is why none of you went that route.

Oh and whats so wrong with my motivation. Why does it anger you and others so. Am I the first person in the history of health care to do it because the job he was working doesnt pay the bills. I think not. You dont know as much about hearts as you think hearticu:clown:

Peanuts? hahaha...Where is jwk? Seriously, what is peanuts to you? 40K? Show me an AA who makes 40K. They don't exist.

Specializes in I know stuff ;).

hey 30

Anesthesiology Assistants (if thats what you meant by AA) make compareable wages as CRNAs. Certainly not 40K a year.

The reason noone here went the "anesthesiology technician" route is because it isnt a profession its a job. They do not require you to be anything before being a tech. Its similar to techs in the ER etc etc. Everyone who goes to CRNA school is already a BSN RN.

What is your problem with the personal attacks? It makes you look like a child who is proven wrong and now lashes out at the people who are trying to teach you something instead of thanking them for the infomation.

either 30andconfused is a troll...or jealous... either way... not worth our time in arguments..after all - we are all about money and this just doesn't pay well enough...

:D

I'm disputing the motives, the ideology nothing personal Mike.
