Dorcas was actually used quite often before it had the connotations it does now. I've met several of them. They're usually 60+

I went to high school (graduated early 1970s) with a girl whose mother was named Dorcas. She was a justice of the peace, and for many years she sponsored a Christmas toy drive for underprivileged children in her district. After her death, the daughter carried it on with her mother's name still attached to it.

Two babies I've had that are really memorable, although we have had MANY, are Tractor Ford and Jewelry Cash ?

My mom name on her birth certificate is Flossie Mae. The story was that she said my grandmother was dumb enough to accept $20 if she gave her baby that name. My grandmother was about 17 when she had my mom.

My mom, never went by Flossie and used the name the first name Dorothy. Yes, as a bratty kid I did tease her at times when I was younger.  Anyway she got her RN license, joined the military, married, and had kids all while using her acceptable name.

Well 60 plus years later when she went to the DMV to renew her license and get that new REAL license, they told her unless she gets an official name change Flossie will have to be on her license.  Mom, was pissed saying "I've been using Dorothy for 60 ? yrs ( you get the point)!"

She had to pay $750, the cheapest in my state for her name change. She never told my  grandmother, because she said she was old and it would upset her.  She didn't like shelling out that $750.

I looked it up on average it is $150 to $450 for name change. I remember my mom saying that, but you have to do all the filing and other things too like announcing in the paper of your name change???? Basically its a process. So for a lawyer to do all that it was $750. Guess a greedy lawyer could of charged more.

Looks like California has the highest filing fees. That's JUST the filing fees.

Desi - you reminded me. Waaaay back, they had to publish/announce upcoming weddings in the newspapers. Something called 'bans' or 'bands'??? Like it was supp to provide an opp'ty for anyone to protest the wedding (name change) because the person was a 'bad' person.

I don't understand that part, but every state has it. I think if a person is really young they shouldn't have to pay any fees, if their given name is obviously stupid. Like the 18 yr old mentioned earlier, why should she have to shell out $100s to change her name from Clitoria. Hell why does she have to wait until she's 18? Something like that should be free!

Point well made!

Couldnt imagine a lawyer who would charge a poor teen a nickle to change that name. At least get the judge to waive or reduce the fee

Grover

It wouldn't be so funny if we hadn't had a dog with that name.

As a surname it's OK. Then there's the president, Grover Cleveland and the ball player Grover Cleveland Alexander. And the pediatrician who switched "Grover" (his mother's maiden name) from first to middle name.

It's Banns.

banns" or "bans" /ˈbænz/ (from a Middle English word meaning "proclamation", rooted in Frankish and from there to Old French)

a notice read out on three successive Sundays in a parish church, announcing an intended marriage and giving the opportunity for objections.

In 1983, the Roman Catholic Church removed the requirement for banns and left it to individual national bishops' conferences to decide whether to continue this practice, but in most Catholic countries the banns are still published.

 Thanks Google!

spotangel - TY for the info. There was a comment re 'banns' in the old Bing Crosby movie 'Going My Way' when the newly married heroine's husband chides his protesting father for not reading them because 'he never read  past the financial section'.

Even today, I believe there must be announcements in the paper for adoption name changes and building variances. Allows folk the chance to speak out if desired.
