Whats your favorite part of nursing?

I won't repeat the title but what do you guys think?

Help during codes...

Patients education...

Assist in families during the grieving process...

I'll tell you mine...I like catching things that doctors and respiratory therapists may overlook or miss completely. It keeps me on my toes and is an instant reminder that I make a difference.

It could be something stupid like rounding on your patient who's wheezing and in respiratory distress. The physician rounds and orders a set of ABGs, steroids IV, chest X-ray and a set of labs including enzymes. After all said and done you assess your patient and realize that his nasal O2 has been disconnected this entire time. You hook him back up and his sat goes up to 96% and the wheezing gradually dissipates.

Having to take 2 weeks of Bactrim twice a year for subcutaneous MRSA infections. Being hit, spit at, screamed at by doctors, screamed at by family members, not receiving medications from pharmacy in a timely manner, waiting 6 hours for a chest x-ray to comeback, waiting 4 days for a C&S to come back, and so much more. Awesome profession.

LOL! Totally my response but you beat me to it :)

The times where my education and experience makes a big difference in patient treatment, care and overall outcome.

This might happen a half a dozen times a year, but it is very rewarding.

The times where I can educate staff, in the moment, about mental illness. And it makes at least some difference.

And the times where I travel to one of my more remote clinical sites, and after work, there is a local restaurant that has sweet potato fries that have to be the nation's best.

My favorite part was -

All the ginger ale I could drink.

And the bubble ice.

That is why I became a nurse.

I have a low happiness threshold.

I also like having a chance to jump in and help another nurse work on a crashing patient (less stressful when it's not your own patient lol)

So true- me too.

This is a great thread - thank you to all for sharing.

I agree, and I stumbled upon it at a good time for it.

I think I like the art part of nursing, the times when my intuition shows me things I didn't even know I knew. And, in keeping with other posts on this thread, it often seems like listening is a good way to access that intuition. Also, fluffing pillows is way easier than chest compressions.
