Hi my Mom is taking the Nclex RN and I want to help her pass. I was wondering if this is a good strategy.
Since you have 6 hours for the test take maybe the first 4 and really really focus on the first 75 questions and try to get them right. Even though this will take up most of your time it won't matter because if you get most of the first 75 right you pass correct?
What do you guys think?

Spending 4 hours on 75 questions will lead to over thinking. Aiming to get the first 75 correct is adding unnecessary stress to the test-taking experience, IMO. She should just aim to try her best and at whatever magic # the test stops, well, so be it. She should aim to spend no more than 1-2 minutes on each question and should not focus on the # of Qs she is receiving. She can still pass with all 265. Keep in mind, there are pilot questions on the exam as well.

The best strategy is knowing how to choose the BEST answer; how one approaches the NCLEX itself: understanding the four concepts of becoming a competent, entry-level nurse:
1. Safe, effective care;
2.Health promotion;
3.Physiological Integrity;
4.Psychosocial integrity
Will determine WHAT the question is asking you; the question may be Respiratory related-but is it a Health Promotion or a Safety, or a Physiological or a Psychosocial one? Would you know the difference and choose the BEST answer?
Once one understands the concepts of NCLEX, they can do so successfully.
The best vet for being prepared for the long haul of the exam is to test with different amount of questions: 75, then 135, 185, then 205, then 265.
I did this to prepare for the exam and ended up with the minimum and passed.

I think what's important is not to spend too much time in questions. I would agree with RN403 1-2 minutes is good enough. Try to use the Decision tree of Kaplan. Always best thing to do is to eliminate the wrong answers. Apply the strategy.. Assessment or Implement.. physical or phsycosocial ABC.. I am taking my board this weekend! Good luck to your mom.

I agree with the other previous posts. This test isn't so much about the number of questions/time spent as it as about knowing the content and how to answer each type of question. There are various types of study materials out there for her to use. Understand content then move on to how to answer the types of questions.
