What other units do you work on besides your "home" unit?

I only work in the emergency department, but I am interested in possibly trying a few shifts on the psych floor which got me thinking....what other units do you work on besides your "home" unit? How did you get to work on a different unit?

Specializes in ABMT.

I work in medical ICU. I pick up OT in the bone marrow txp unit and in the surgical ICU. I love my "field trips." I like doing OT outside my home unit--I always learn something new, gain some new skills, have a chance to do a little networking, and every time come back "home" more deeply appreciating what I've got.

Specializes in tele, oncology.

Where I work we can get pulled one level up in acuity...since I work tele, I can get pulled up to step-down (but not ICU), a medical nurse can go to tele (but not step-down or ICU). And of course we can get pulled to staff lower acuity floors as well, although it's rare that you'd find an ICU nurse working medical...it just doesn't happen. L&D and psych are considered separate entities so there's no pulling back and forth from those units. Very few get pulled to post-partum, just those with experience. We don't have a peds floor, so the nursery nurses are pretty much it for that unit too.
