What type of nurse does everyone want to eventually end up being?

Just wondering where does everyone want to end up? Right now I work at a teaching level one trauma hospital in tucson. I work on a intermediate care floor, which is a step down. I want to end up as a trauma ICU nurse, or anywhere in the ICU except neuro! Maybe flight nursing down the road. I want to go back to Flagstaff cause I'm ready to pick a place to call home and settle. Tucson has too many people and no outdoors except for Mt. Lemmon.

I am exactly where I want to end up, however I do hope to get my RN in the future. Hospice is where I am supposed to be and I hope to never have to do anything else.

I never thought I'd be doing this type of nursing, but now nothing else would ever feel right.

ICU, then maybe on to PACU or possibly being a clinical instructor

Funny thing about this thread...first day of school we had to write a letter to ourselves about what kind of nurse we wanted to be. Letter was mailed to us after graduation - long after I forgot writing the letter. I wrote something to the effect of ICU or oncology NP. Now I work in the PACU and would not dream of doing the NP thing or going back to the ICU. Been out of school exactly one year...funny how working changes your perspective.

David,

What is stopping you from applying to FMC if you want to move back to Flag? I work at FMC now as an extern and graduate in Dec. and am beginning their new grad program for January. If you have at least 1 year of experience down at Tuscon then you don't have to apply as a new grad (that is my understanding from HR). FMC is a level one trauma center and has a great critical care training program (from what I have heard from people who did it). Good luck.

I have to stay at the hospital I'm at until next september. I actually did my preceptorship when I was in nursing school in the ER at FMC, but I had decided to move to the bigger city and get a different experience than what I would get in Flagstaff. You are actually the first person who has said anything positive about FMC. Everyone else that I ask always say they are unsatisfied with working at FMC but they never give me specifics. That what I hate about it, i never know why people don't like working there, so I'm kinda iffy about working there.

At this point I would like to eventually work in Pediatric Cardiology or in PICU. I have to say that most of the people I know have started nursing school wanting to work in one area and ended up working somewhere completely different. Recently I started volunteering for Hospice and I am really enjoying it, so who knows maybe I will wind up as a Hospice nurse. :nuke:

I haven't stared school yet (this is a total career chage for me LOL) but I've been doing home care and my recent hospice client has really made me want to work in hospice. But who knows, I could nd up in Public Health or something else, I love to teach.:heartbeat

I've worked L&D for a LOT of years, and it is the best. If anyone wants to work in a (mostly!) happy environment, thats the way to go!

I'm definitely leaning towards Emergency, as I'm already an EMT. Though I don't have a job yet (this will change in about a week when I'll hear back from Banner Good Sam about an ED tech position I interviewed for) I still love everything emergency/trauma related.

Down the road a few years, I'd like to get on as a flight nurse, but we'll see about that.

Later on in my career, I may go into education. I'd love to try and help out those long waiting lists that we are all having trouble with. But who knows what God has planned for me...

I believe that I'm now 75% sure I'll switch to be an ER nurse vs ICU. The floor I work on now which is a trauma step down unit; many mornings when I leave work to go home I feel unfulfilled and unsatisfied. Floor nursing is so redundant and boring at times. I can't wait for my contract to be up!

Funny how I took this question. I realize you meant it differently, but my first response was that I wanted to remain compassionate, thorough, detail oriented, with a regard for my patients well being and a strong respect for the impact that my care (or lack there of) can have on my patients. I see this mind set lacking more and more everyday in my profession and I sometimes feel like a freak for still feeling this way. I often hear people say it is the older veteran nurses that are burned out and lacking in these areas, but I kill myself everyday at work because of my philosophy of nursing. I have seen burned out older nurses, but I have also seen a lot of nurses new to the profession (within the last 10 years) that just don't care.... I am very saddened by this.

Excellent answer, dorimar! :) I, too, want to remain compassionate and empathic to patients and their families throughout my nursing career.

As far as what branch of nursing I want to be in... wow, there are so many possibilities. I am still a student, so that is hard to say. I am very interested in gastroenterology and endocrinology nursing, especially disorders and diseases of the pancreas. I was thrilled to learn that Tucson is getting a new pancreas center and hope to one day be able to work there. I'm also interested in neurology nursing and orthopedics is fascinating to me, so who knows where I will end up? I just want to be the best nurse I can be and make a difference in people's lives. :nurse:
