What To Do About the Counteroffer?

Published

So...I put in my resign. notice for the worst job I've EVER had (talked about it plenty on this site) and now the counteroffer: A promo w/raise (mind you they offered this same promo w/o pay increase just last week), any schedule I want, and much more--basically the moon & stars. My mind is definitely made up. I can't risk such a sweet deal as I've been offered w/the new position--tuition reimburs (I'm returning to school), more than 3 weeks pto time, too many great bene's to name. How do you reject the counteroffer w/o burning your bridges and w/o basically telling them that you are leaving because you HATE working there?

Well first congrats on the new job! As to burning bridges with the past employer, you are right - you don't want to do that. I would tell them that I have found something more suited for my lifestyle as I return to school and leave it at that. Good luck.

Say "no, thanks" and run.

Counteroffers never work -- the same conditions that made you want to leave will still be there, and the promises don't necessarily come through unless you've got them in writing.

Been there, done that, moved on.

Once I finally get across that I'm outta there I just have this strange feeling that they will get mad and sort of make my final days there feel like a stand-off. They are very two-faced and I can only imagine the cold shoulder I'll be getting soon.

Which will only prove that you're making the right decision to leave. I'd just say "no, thanks, I've already made my decision".

If you have any PTO left at the jo you are leaving, ask if you use that to fill in some of the last 2 weeks you'll be working thre. It'll give them less of a chance to make your last days " a stand off" if you're not there!
