What should i think now!!!

Published

Ok, so here goes. I applied for a new graduate nurse position from Dec of 09, right. I got back an email from them stating that someone else better qualified was selected for the position. Anyway, so i decided to call and ask specifically for the Nurse Recruiter like i always try to do anyway, so the lady on the phone, said yes, can i help you. So, i told her my position and she looked me up in the computer and said it said that i was under qualified, so i started thinking to myself how the hell i am under qualified, when i do have the basic of what they were asking for, the only thing i don't have at this time as of yet is BLS, I am currently looking into geting that squared away, but still can that really stop me from getting hired? So, she went and connected me to guy that supposedly was the one to look over my resume b/c she said that he might be able to tell me why i was deemed under qualified, well he was no help b/c he looked me up also and said he doesn't know why, but he can tell me what they require which was a Bachelors( which i do have in Nursing) and at least 1 year hospital experience, so i said well working as nurse or what, b/c if u are considered to be a new grad u are not necessarily going to have that as yet and he said no, any kind of hospital experience, so said well that i do have i worked as a Nurse Tech or 4 years, and all he could say was, oh, well, i don't know why then but i will talk with the nurse recruiter and if anything after she re-looks over my resume if she has any questions or whatever she might give me a call.

Now i am just sharing this b/c i am like, okay what am i suppose to think after that conversation, to me it's kind of weird, but i am curious to see what you guys think, so hopefully u will read and share ur thoughts with me.

Thanks

I think that there were several qualified applicants for the job -- and while you meet the minimal requirements of the job, a lot of the applicants were probably more qualified than you. (I know my hospital gets moe than a dozen applicants for each RN job posted.)

So ... as one of the least qualified applicants, you didn't get the job. They probably gave it to someone with experience as an RN.

Employers set "minimal requirements" for jobs that state the least that they will consider. However, they often hope to actually hire people who do more than meet the minimal requirements. The people saying that you meet the qualications are correct in that you meet the minimum required for the job. However, the person who said you were underqualified had more information and knew that you were not as qualified as what they hoped to hire.

"Minimal required" and "hope to hire" are 2 very different things in the real world.

I agree. From my experience those positions are often filled internally from their own CNAs who have just graduated. It stinks! Good luck!

Sounded like they were kind of at a loss as to what to say to you to get you off the line without giving them too much of a fuss. Most rejections will say "underqualified" because that is how they program the computers to make it easy. What is really meant is "less qualified than the one we chose". They hope that the majority of applicants will get the rejection email and not bother them to go into detail to justify their decision.

I thank you guys for all your response. However am i glad that i called or what , b/c i got back a phone call from one their recruiters and if i had to say, it seems as if i was given a mini phone interview. Now had i not called to follow up i probably would have never gotten that small window opened.

I actually do believe not having the BLS can keep you from getting a job, most nursing programs require it. Most jobs want you to have it when you apply.

If you don't have it get it ASAP.

The 4 years nurse tech experience should be an asset to you.

The nurse tech exp might get you an interview, but you still have to blow their mind on the interview
