What would you do!?!

Let me start off by saying I am a new grad. I REALLY would like to work in L&D. I worked in L&D as student and I absolutely loved!! I kind of accepted a job at a hospital that is less than 10 minutes from my house but I really don't want to work there though. I say kind of because I haven't signed any paper work and I haven't heard from them since saying I could work there.

I could have worked at another hospital (its also affiliated with the hospital I accepted a job at) but in a another position but I did not want to work on any of the floors they offered (at the time) and I also held out a while after getting offered the jobs (ortho and 2 med surg; all managed by one manager) because I was waiting to see if I got a job in the nursery (I wanted this job because I would get to work PP and maybe in the future I would've gotten to transfer to L&D) at a neighboring hospital (I did not get the job?). I had the interviews around the same time like 3 days apart which was the week of spring break.

I only waited because the manager had said I would know something in about 2-3 weeks but it was a lot longer than that it like 7-8 weeks within about 1 week after I had job offers at the first hospital I was forced to decide so I declined. Also I had talked to the hiring manager maybe 2 times after the initial interview since I had not heard from her in the amount of time she had promised.

So should I keep looking for a job in L&D?! Also do you think i have the right to be kind of picky with the job that I chose? Sorry if what I said was confusing I just feel frustrated right now!!?

Also I did apply for a L&D position at both hospitals. One told me they weren't hiring any new grads but hired some of my classmates any way after about 3 weeks. The other hospital turned down both of the applications for the delivery room without a interview. After I graduated in may another application was available at the 2nd hospital was available in postpartum which I mostly dealt with as a student (it was same L&D unit). I recently applied to some hospitals that are about 2 hours from home in various areas (one in L&D) this was before i accepted the position but no interview yet.

No, you can’t be picky. Yes, you should accept one of the positions that was offered to you.

As an L&D hiring manager, based only on your post, you strike me as somewhat immature and I likely would not hire you, if your post is a reflection of your behavior in real life.

It isn't I just needed to vent. I just wanted to get others thoughts as I rambled.

I don't think any new grad should be faulted for wanting to work in a particular area. I also, held out for the area I wanted upon graduation and had a job secured before I was finished.

Alternative: Do you WANT a new grad to work in an area they are not interested in? Of course you don't.

If you can, try to hold out for a job in L&D (if you are willing to move, you WILL find one) or take the med-surg job...it will serve you well, but I'll warn you, it is very hard work because it's the catch-all floor and most hospitals staff very poorly based on acuity...but most hospitals have a policy that you have to stay in a job for six to 12 months before applying for a transfer.

I disagree. She's probably young and excited and has a specific interest. As you know, either you love OB or you hate it..there doesn't seem to be an in-between. You cannot train for compassion and drive...either someone has it coming in the door or they don't. She absolutely has that.
