After spending several hundred dollars (maybe more than 500 but less than 1000 dollars) and a few weeks (a month?) investing in a CNA certificate, how much can you expect to earn in different areas of the US? Does night shift pay more?

I live in Pittsburgh area...just got hired at a LTC facility and am starting out at $8 for 2 weeks for the class and certification test, up to $9.75 for job shadowing for 2 weeks, then $11.16 an hour on the 3 to 11 shift permanently. (plus .75 extra every other weekend). Hope that helps!!!

You are getting paid for training and learning? You don't need to attend a separate class?

There are 3-4 places around me that hire you, pay you to train you to become a CNA, and pay for the state exam. The classes are only a couple of weeks.

Wow, I would love that! Where do you live? Do they take out of state people too?

Sometimes it does not always depend on what state you work, but where you work as well. Different places will have different pay scales. Hospitals pay different then LTC. LTC pays different then Home Care extra.

I work for home care and am making 10.00 with 10.75 on weekends. I can go up as high as 12.00 I believe as I put in my years of service. Yes I probably could be making 11.00 to 12.00 and hour now if I worked in ltc, but you have to judge things sometimes the cercumstaces of the jobs. The money sometimes are not the only benifits to where you want to work.

For instance I am getting 10.00 and only have to take care of one person. One bath, dressing, a meal, light house work. While others in ltc have 12 sometimes more people to have to get up, change, bath, bring to meals, answering call lights not being able to sometimes take a break. If you break it down to the amount of work, and amount of people you are taking care of who is getting the better deal? I am making 10.00 for the person I am taking care of while another person maybe making a dollar per person they are taking care of.

Caskey-Are you on a contract with the company that you have to work for an amount of time with them since they are paying for your training?

I live in Easter Ohio. I'm sure that they would hire out of state people, if you plan to relocate to work there. I live in Eastern Ohio, and I just heard an advertisement on the radio yesterday that one of the places is hiring.

Yeah, they pay you to take the class and get certified...all while having a job guaranteed to you after you learn all the skills. So many facilities offer it...there are websites that show all of the places that offer it in your area. Just do some research! Its a great opportunity for someone who has to pay bills while getting education (like me) and also keeps you from spending 500-1000 dollars and taking the risk of even finding a job after certification.

mvm2- No contract! From what I have heard majority of places don't make you sign. The facility offers a lot of benefits etc I think to try and get people to stay working there.

Could you list some links of websites that show all of the places that offer it in your area?

Your best bet is to do a search of all health facilities in your area, hospitals, LTC facilities(nursing homes, assisted living etc) and go onto their job postings. They post the classes usually in the job section. Since you probably don't have any experience in healthcare on your resume just list your past work experiences and why they relate some. Example would be waitressing, dealing with people etc. Also personal qualities about yourself such as a strong desire to help people, compassion etc. I was nervous about how to even get in and what to put on a resume so thats what ultimately got me the call.

Thank you. I did call a good amount of assisted living but none of them provided training.
