What shifts are nurses working?

What shifts are nurses at your hospital working? 4-8-12 hour? 7a-7p, 7p-7a, 8a-4p, 7a-3p. 11p-7a. We are thinking of going to all 12 hour shifts and do away with all others. Anybody doing that?

we have all 12's...personally I would like to put together a few 8's but almost everyone wants to do 3 12 hour shifts..

I just started on a ms unit and all the shifts in our hospital are 12 hours. You work 2-12's off 2 days, work 3-12's off 3 and it rotates like that so we end up working 84 hs Q2wks.

The 3-12's have been the hardest so far. That last day is killer esp the last 5 hs and then if you fall behind on charting getting out late sucks!! We do have an op surgery area that has the posh M-F 8-3 shift.

I'm will be starting with 7pm -7am..So let me understand,I work 2 days one week and 3 days one week??????????I was told I will have to work 3 days every week and may be on weekends?

i'm terrorized with the thought of working at night as i'm not a night person but with 2 schoolgoing kids that's my best option now.

I don't think I'm ready.I can use some moral support.

Not necessarily. Your schedule will depend on YOUR facility. Each facility handles these things differently. Most people work 3 12's per week for full-time hours (72 hours per pay period). Most units require every other weekend. That said...there are many variations. Some people work 3 12's one week and 2 12's the other (60 hours per pay period), some others work on 2, off 2, on 3, off 2, on 2, off 3 (84 hours per pay period). It just depends on what your facility -- and your particular unit -- does. The unit I am working in now combines 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 hour shifts. As long as there is adequate coverage, they really don't care how the staff splits up their shifts. We self-schedule and it works very well for us.

We work 3 12's per week. They may be arranged anyway you want (self-scheduling), as long as you work 3/week, and 2 weekend days/schedule. It's great!
