A research paper is just that, a research paper. You are generally given a topic to write about or you select a topic based on parameters set forth by the instructor. It takes time to research, write, and appropriately site each research source based on method provided by instructor. I don't know what an lvn paper consists of nor the standards. I have written hundreds of papers in my time though and follow the same format for all. Introduction, body, conclusion. Papers can also be used to compare and contrast. I've written papers that are two pages up to 70 pages.
Hope that clears it up.
Thanks understood!

A research paper is a formal piece of writing where you condense the research of several sources into one paper of your own. For example, let's say your topic is the incidence of nosocomial (hospital staff caused) infections on IV lines. You would go to an academic database (not Google) and look up several peer-reviewed studies on this topic. You would look for statistics, causes, and solutions. You would present an opinion on the best solution, based on (A), (B), and © research study. And perhaps a contrary opinion from (D) and (E) study to show you have considered all sides.
Research papers have a very specific format and you must follow the rules or lose points. My school uses APA formatting rules. I bit the bullet first year and shelled out $70 for the APA style guide. All my papers in all my classes have gotten A's.

You never wrote one in high school? You might want to take a writing course. You will need to know how to write in APA format. Most schools require a writing course before entering an LPN program. It would be to your advantage to learn so you can at least write before starting.
A great website to look at it PurdueOwl. I use it all the time for my papers. It will give you all the rules for writing not only a paper but writing it in APA format. Plus, if you have Microsoft word, you can often set it up to automatically format your paper in APA. The American Psychological Association Website is also a great help.

I also used PurdueOwl and it is a great resource for APA. The examples they provide are great! I purchased an APA guide in my BSN program that was also helpful but the PurdueOwl site was quick and easy to navigate.
