What does the red notification box mean?

Yes, I am this stupid. At the top of the screen is a read square box with a number in it next to my name. What does this mean? It seems to have no association with "likes" or personal messages.

Another mystery to ponder. When I go on-line at work the little red box is a little red circle.

Me too! I think it's because my work computers still uses Windows XP
