What do nursing unions do?

I know there has been a lot of talk about unions lately. Exactly what do they do for nurses?

Unions no longer belong in healthcare for RNs. we should be developed enough as a profession to follow a shared goverance model. I agree that they breed mediocrity and just because you have seniority does not mean you are entitled to more than me. that's what often happens. been a nurse for a long time, worked both sides, prefer non union shared governance. i would rather take those dues monies and give it to a charitable organization like Doctors without Borders or St Jude, or put it in my 401k, which by the way i have that and a retirement pkg at my non umion facility.
