What is NS NOT compatible with?

I was pondering what normal saline is not compatible with. Thanks.

So what do you flush it with? Do you actually draw up a flush of D5 1/2 NS? I've been a nurse for 4 years, and have always flushed with NS, and have never had a problem....
Same here. I am wondering if the precipitate was caused by residual of another drug or solution.

Should not be administered with other drugs because of possible precipitation (incompatible with most fluids; should be administered into an IV of normal saline solution).

Compatibility. VALIUM should, as a matter of principle, be injected alone. In routine mixed injections, it is incompatible with aqueous solutions of other medicaments, and precipitation of the active substance will ensue. In 5 to 10% glucose infusion or in an equal volume of 0.9% saline, the active substance remains in solution sufficiently long without precipitation if handled as follows. The contents of the ampoules (not more than 4 mL) must be quickly and thoroughly mixed with the total volume of the infusion medium, which should be at least 250 mL, and infusion begun immediately.

I like to just get valium changed to PO or another IV med if the doc will go for it. Then precipitates aren't a problem at all.:)

You can't reconstitute erythromycin with NS. Major precipitation.

Oxaliplatin is not compatible with NS it must be mixed in D5W

Amiodarone

So, in a code situation, what do you flush the Amiodarone with? Do you take the time out of coding a patient to draw up some other sort of flush???

Maybe we can find a pharmacist.

Here I am! :w00t:

We sometimes mix bicarb with NS, but more commonly we use dextrose or D5 and some other saline combination. I did discover a while back that bicarb is NOT compatible with lactated Ringer's.

I haven't read the whole thread, but Bactrim IV and Zyvox are not compatible with NS either.

So, RPh- what's your opinion on whether or not valium & amiodarone can be given IVP & then flushed with NS?

just a note:

there seems to have been a glitch with the software here when several of you were posting and there was a multitude of duplicate and triplicate posts. they were removed but since there were so many of them, will not send a pm to each of you and posting here that they were removed to keep the flow better.

thanks for your understanding on this.

I wouldn't recommend it.
