For those of you who like your job-what is it about ER nursing that you enjoy?

Pushing Narcan, killing their buzz.
Pushing Versed, waiting for the snore. (then push the buttons to cardiovert)
Watching an 80 year old man recover from Ketamine.
Getting a hug from the little peanuts after giving them an injection.

The detective work... you have some really sick dude roll in, and you have to figure out why he's sick, and what's going to make him better. It's fun.
I'm also lucky to work with docs who trust my judgement and value my opinion.

I'm considering going into nursing, and I definitely would want to go into the ER. For all you ER nurses, is it harder to get assigned to the ER than other areas of the hospital? As in, is this a plum assignment that everyone wants?
I dont think so - it is a different set of skills and skill level than juggling 7-8 med surg patients or 5 drip titrations in the ICU. You just have to see if it is for you - it cant be taken lightly like any type of nursing - you must be serious and very self motivated. ER is not for the "cream of the crop" nurses - we have our piece of junk nurses like every unit and you should not be intimidated by the myth that it is an elite group if this is truly what you want to do - go for it.

Oh..... How could I have ever forgot about Adenosine. My first time; that 3 second flat line felt like 30 minutes. Never got that same scary feeling back with the ones after that.

A little bit of this....a little bit of that....nothing lasts too long.

Kind of like heroin, but for ER nurses
