What Is The Least Stressful Nursing Specialty?

Published

Hello!

Any opinions on which nursing specialty is the least stressful?

Thanks,

jollyjenny

Specializes in MICU/SICU.

Are you looking for a nursing job without stress?

Oh, no. I know all areas of nursing are stressful, and I know every job can be stressful. But I have heard complaints about certain specialties more than others. For example, LOTS of people talk about med/surg being extremely stressful, whereas NICU nurses may not have quite as much stress on their unit and SEEM to really love where they are. I'm just curious.

Maybe a better question to ask would be who is very satisfied with their nursing specialty and what that speciality is. You may see a trend that way that might inform your own decisions.

Yes, a very subjective question. I work in what some consider a highly stressful environment; however, I love what I do, so work is in fact not all that stressful for me.

Specializes in NICU.

I work in the NICU as an extern, not an RN yet and I LOVE it but it is still stressfull. There's not as much running around compared to say a med surg unit or ER though. I mean, you have 2 or 3 patients all within like 20 feet or so rather than patients up and down the hallway from eachother.

Specializes in ER/ medical telemetry.

Please let me know which nursing job is less stressful, because I really want to go there!

For me, newborn nursery has been the least stressful. My favorite is still NICU though, even with the stress I love it:)

From past experiences in school and from what I have heard from others ...

psych nursing - one of my favourite areas of nursing because it is so interesting but because pt.'s are medically stable, it was not as stressful (at least for me)

working in a clinic - hours are sweet, pt's are stable

school nursing - you get your summers off, holidays and weekends off, regular hours

post partum - most moms and babies are healthy, the work becomes routine, it is a happy place

I also think there is a huge difference in stress level between level 1 trauma centres vs. level 3 trauma centres ...

Specializes in LTC, med-surg, critial care.

Babies that aren't mine or related to me make me nervous. I couldn't work NICU or the nursery because I'd be taking care of someone else's child and mama's are protective. Now that's stressful. ;)

LTC was low stress for me. You have 50 residents at one time but they are all relatively stable, have a routine, you know the "tricks" to work with them since you see them on a regular basis...except for the insane charting.

I think it depends on the person.

I would have to say private duty nursing has the least amount of stress. The stress is about equal for med surg, psych, homecare and any other area I have been on in the hospital.
