What do you HATE to do at work?

I thought it would be interesting to see what things nurses dread doing. For example, I hate suctioning people, there is something about seeing stuff go thru the suc cath that flips me out. Weird huh? I can take vomitting, poop, blood etc, but when its contained in that suc cath and moving thru to the cannister, I get sick. What about the rest of you?

what i hate most at work is the continual flow of the regulars into the ER. I have worked same ER for years and it seems I know them all and am sympathetic with most but the number is increasing and it seems like the few breaks we get from the real ER stuff is filled in with migraines, toothaches, and backaches. They also are catching on and finding out which er mds are working and they know the ones that are user-freindly. I dread my shift falling on the one when our "Lortab special Doc" is working. Our ER visits increase dramatically. I do have to admit to also falling into the trap myself. I have on few times suggested to new er docs, "I know that patient well, please give them a few lortabs or stadol and get them OTD, I need bed space." Sorry i am just on a rant today dave

My jail is EXACTLY the same! We have 1,200 inmates and we see the same ones over and over and over!! It makes me want to scream- AHHHH!!!! They drug seek allright, but for anything and everything. Vicodin is the strongest thing we carry and we give it out very seldom. Our guys just like to "get out" and do something to break up the day. Then, once in a while I will start an ABX for an abscess or whatever and they fail to get up in the morning to take it and it starts all over again a week later- Duh!

The thing i hate most about my job is having to call doctors in the middle of the night and getting chewed out.-I believe they chose to be a doctor and they have no right to get mad and be rude when they have to do a little work.

Emptying colostomy bags. I feel guilty saying it but, gosh they stink! :o

Its a funny thing... there is nothing that grosses me out... I can deal with IVDU's and ETOH's who are 'blowing up' in my face, I can deal with people that accuse me of neglecting their relative because I didn't priortise getting them a pitcher of ice water over administering pain relief for someone else. I can do Vital signs till the cows come home, suction this, that and the other... You name it I can put up with it...

Is this the sign of someone who is still too new to nursing??? It could be...

But there is 1 thing that really really gets me irritated...

People complaining about their off duty.

Its not like they have to do anything MORE than the rest of us right? And in many cases, being the new guy on the ward means Ive been eager to please/prove myself and so ive done the night shift no one wanted to cover, ive been called at 4am to come into work because they are short and the budget won't cover an agency nurse, ive stayed on for three hours past my shift end time because someone is running late or a patient and their relatives just needed someone to talk to or the day had been so busy that to have left without finishing it would have meant the night staff would be overwhealmed...

Ok... so ive just complained about my off duty :roll ... I hope i'm not being a hypocrite!:chuckle

Its very funny to read what you all hate. Gee.... I hate lots of things. I must pick one and the winner is????? suctioning. Thank goodness we have no suctioning where I work. I have had to suction only enough times to know to avoid it at all costs. I almost gag when I see it and the noise is too much for me. I can handle most icky things but could name many that I prefer to avoid.

I work in jail and the worst thing for me is all the rotted teeth R/T drug abuse.

Have you worked 'in jail' long? Have you worked other types of places? How does it compare? I'm a curious nursing student - just got my NA license and am considering options for where to work while I get the rest of my RN.

I'm a new NA (= limited experience) so it's really great for me to realize that everyone has things they can't stand! I'm going to go on and get my RN, despite all the people telling me I'm too old, too inexperienced, too much of an old trucker, etc. None of that worries me, but the one thing that has given me pause is ... I HATE NOSEBLEEDS!! Colostomies? I find them interesting. Poop? I worked in daycare for a long time - no prob. Same with pee. Wounds, trachs, etc. are just all too interesting so I forget to even be grossed out. But my deep, dark secret is that I absolutely cannot handle nosebleeds. The one time in my life when I thought I had one (turned out the blood was from the outside of my nose!) I actually threw up! Now THAT has made me wonder about myself. "If I can't handle nosebleeds do I really have what it takes to be a nurse?" So reading these replies is great. I guess we all have our weirdnessses. It's really funny reading what sets us each off. Makes me smile over my chemistry book.

Meal trays, don't know why, but I can't stand them. Passing them, picking them up, menus, tallying I&Os, all of it. Something about that chore that drives me crazy.

PUKE!!!! the whole process...from start to finish!!! the noise!!! the noise!!! the smell!!! the smell!!! bleed on me, poop on me, i dont care if you hoark up the nastiest green funk from the depths of your lungs, onto me....just please, dont PUKE!!! (especially if your a detoxer, who spent your last $10 on pizza & chicken wings, before you decided you needed to pass out @ the 7-11 & local pd delivers you to me!!!) the smell!!!! the noise!!! the horror of it all!!!

and the sound of a head...hitting the floor!!!! omg!!!! if i NEVER hear it again, it will be too SOON!!!

i was asked to assist the podiatrist one fateful day, and had to hold the hand of a pt. getting a cortisone inject in the bottom of their foot!!! needles dont bother me...i give a great inject, or so i've been told...and am not at all shy when starting iv's or drawing labs.........but to witness that!!!! i damn near fainted!!!! the doc was more concerned about me than the pt!!! needless to say, he never asked me to assist again!!

Next time I get a patient with a tampon stuck, you can come and remove it. Then we'll revisit that statement. :rotfl:
