What do you hate most about your job?

Published

Hey lovely (or studly) nurses,

Upcoming strong word advisory.

What do you *hate* the most about your job? Like over the past week or so --

what have you been most stressed, angry, hurt, or annoyed about?

I'm doing some informal research to help me understand the needs of nurses….and would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!

Computer charting.

Hi Spidey's mom,

Thanks! What is it about computer charting that you like the least?

Computer charting.

This. As we've recently switched charting systems charting has been the bane of my existence. :arghh:

Poor management... Hiring travelers while refusing to increase pay to local norms, running off the best nurses, staffing with 90% inexperienced nurses because they've treated people so poorly that everyone has left. Terrible communication, inaccessible management. Bad attitudes... Hard to overcome in current environment.

I am working exactly where I want to work, I don't want to leave...

Ug. So sorry to hear this, OlivetheRN.

What is it that makes charting the bane of your existence? (For example, having to learn something new, not explained well, I feel incompetent, etc.)

I don't mind learning something new. In fact, learning new things is why I moved to the OR. What has made it the bane of my existence is that we got poor instruction on it before hand in our department (i.e. In another department they were allowed to go to another hospital in our system who already used this system and see what it was like and practice with it in an actual live environment, not a practice environment). There were a lot of things that when we asked how would we chart x, y, and z, we were told, "we're not sure, that's being built, we'll see it go live day." Overall it hasn't been terrible, I guess. I moved departments two weeks after go live and I like the OR side of things a heck of a lot better than I like the charting in the other department I was in so that's a plus, but it's still been very frustrating.

Hi MilliePieRN,

Fascinating.

I'm really interested in hearing more! Especially:

  1. What kinds of things does the management do/not do say/not say when they communicate poorly? How often do you find yourself thinking about it?

  2. Inaccessible management” is one I haven't heard. Intriguing. I'd love to hear an example if you're willing to share.

    Thanks!

Hi OlivetheRN again,

Well, I can see why that would be very frustrating. You like to learn, but the system wasn't taught very well!

:/

This might be an "out there" question, but -- Had you thought about advocating to get the same "live environment training" at another hospital? Like that other dept. received?

If so, what kept you from inquiring about it?

We didn't know they had gotten that kind of training until after the fact. Had I known you better believe we ALL would have asked about being able to do that. We're a vocal bunch of people in my old department and in the OR.

Oh, man! So wish you vocal folks could have known before the fact!

Thanks again!
