What Freaks You Out?

Okay, people. It's time for a nice, fun, light-hearted discussion to blow off some steam.

WHAT FREAKS YOU OUT? What bodily fluid can't you STAND? What wound gives you the absolute WILLIES? It doesn't matter if you're an ADN, BSN, LPN, CNA, PQRST, ABCDEFG...every body gets the heebie jeebies over SOMETHING...even you stomach-of-steel ER nurses!

Mine is eyeball injuries/surgery...aaaaaaaaackkkkkkk!! Gross! Makes my skin absolutely CRAWL. Or when someone gets a little cut on their finger/toe/whatever and then squeezes it to make it bleed!! Bleah!! Then there's the ever-popular RESPIRATORY SECRETIONS. I can handle poop, pee, amniotic fluid, lanced boils, pus, whatever...but give me a nasty snot-filled trach, and I'm OUTTA THERE.

Share, share, share people! biggrin.gif

I agree!! Our dogs used to get them in the summer and if they got in a crease behind their ear or under their leg, they would get huge swelled up with blood. I would always have to get my dad to pull them off, he then would call them "grapes" and offer them to us as "snacks" for a joke. Funny guy, my dad! :p  There is just something about those little crawly legs sticking out... ewww!!! Also cockroaches, I cannot stand to be around them for a millisecond, they give me the creepy crawly heebie jeebies all over!!

The only thing that I can't handle is the SOUND of bones breaking or grinding. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! it gives me goose bumps and makes me dry heave. Nothing else bothers me, no smells, no nothing. But I have Not smelt a GI Bleed yet, and from what I hear, I don't think I want to!

I can't stand ortho stuff either, crunching bones give me the willies, so I am a cardiac nurse. When I did ER, I couldn't stand runny baby doodie, & GI Bleeds, or c-diff. Staph aureous & pseudomonas is nasty too. No wonder my hands are so dry from all my hand washings! We gotta love this job, else we're all nuts! Beats the heck out of pushing papers as a secretary!

Watching pica pt shove INCHES and INCHEs-ok FEET- of blanket, gown down his throat. The running comment is "would you like ketchup on that?"

Also, not too gross but -

once had a very confused elderly pt with constipation. We tried everything possible. Finally just to get her more comfortable, we put her on the shower chair ( the toilet seat kind, JIC) wheeled her into the shower and she let out the LARGEST amt of stool I have EVER seen. I swear you might have thought an elephant or two had made the pile! Turns out her confusion was related and she thanked us endlessly: turned out to be so sweet.

Oh this thread is great! And we wonder why we keep coming back for more:D I have worked on a respiratory floor where patients are on vents and have trachs. Oh the smells that come from that floor!Absolutely disgusting !! Also I hate dirty ears! That absolutely gets under my skin. And perhaps the most gut renching smell is a patient with cancer. I feel so bad for them but the smell is so unbearable! I think I'll stay on rehab for a while!

Speaking of teeth----a few weeks ago we were gathered at the nursing station for report one fine morning on our ltc dementia unit. One of our gals was seated in the lobby-I heard this lip smacking and slurping noise and turned-She had her upper plate in her hand and was picking off the ...goodies...and EATING! I have never heard such a communal gagging....

Ok, now that I'm done gagging, that's NASTY!

I also get grossed out when I have to clean my patient's suction canister out every night. Oh, the fun of squirting in the dish soap and swirling it around to get that clingy stuff off of the plastic. Yuck.
