new Grads: what was your favorite area of the hospital training during school? Med-surg, Peds, Psych etc?? and why?

Any procedures you liked doing best?

Specializes in Emergency.

I really loved the CCU rotation-critical or cardiac care unit-in my program. The patients were pretty sick. Most were intubated, ventilated, sedated, and on titrated drips to stabilize their pressures. I would think that all of the tubes and lined and drains would freak me out, but I actually loved it. I am on a telemetry floor now to get up on my feet, but plan to work the clinical pathway to get there.

Specializes in Oncology and Perioperative.

I still have the critical care areas to go (final semester), however I've done 2 summer internships - one was in the perioperative area, so I got to do pre-op, OR, and PACU. The second one was oncology. I think I enjoyed the oncology rotation. One of my classmates said she couldn't understand why, but as I explained to her, I felt that anything you did for the patient/family was truly helpful. In oncology you really give of yourself, taking the time out for the families and patients, and I like that. I've had more thank you's for the care I've given in oncology than other areas that I've had clinicals in yet. As I said, though, my rotations aren't 100% done yet. OB was my least favorite area. :)

I'm glad that a lot of nurses don't like OB. More open spots for me!!

My faves were maternity, neuro, and surgical.

ER was my favorite. I got to practice a lot of skills-foleys, IV's, NG tubes- and I got to see alot. The doctors and nurses were very student friendly, and would actually come to find me so that I could either do a skill or watch the doctor do something.

Me too!! :) Seeing a child come into the world....who wouldnt love that?

Specializes in Med onc, med, surg, now in ICU!.

Paeds and ICU, but not PICU! I hated several and disliked the rest apart from these two.

Specializes in ICU.

I loved the baby part of OB. Labor and Delivery is ICKY, but holding babies all day would be the best job ever. It was too depressing though. Too many babies going through withdrawals. ICU was my next favorite, but dang, it's been hard starting out there.
