What do you do when you are faced with a client who is extremely difficult? (ie: curses at you, refuses medications, disturbs other clients)

Ativan or Haldol....but that's usually last resort.
I bring in the charge nurse to see if just asking the patient what could be the problem gets to an answer for their behavior. Maybe family involvement could be the remedy to calm down the patient and if so, we usually get them on the phone. If patient is competent, they have the right to refuse their meds, but hopefully as previously stated, family involvement helps.
I make sure innocent roommate gets a new room ASAP. Not fair to them or family members to have to deal with that.
I set boundaries for combative or rude patients. Document everything and have a charge nurse or other colleague as witness if needed.

This sounds like a homework question. What do YOU think you should do with a difficult client? What do your texts and research tell you about how to deal with difficult clients? We are happy to help you refine your ideas, but let us know where you started and what you think you should do first and we will help you from there. :-)

What is the connection between the title and the question?

O sweetie.
If thats the worst that happens to you you are so lucky.
First, a pt has a right to refuse anything, if one explanation doesn't work move on.
Set boundaries if a pt curses at you promptly tell them it is not acceptable, finish what you are doing and walk away, tell them you will come back when they have settled down.
If a pt is disturbing others work out is it just ignorant behavior or is it deliurm or dementia. My actions depend on whst is the route cause.
