So I am new to this stuff. I live in ON Canada and we have the College of Nurses of Ontario and lots ofNurses are unhappy with them during the pandemic as we pay for memberships, and they don't do crap for Nurses. their role is to ensure public safety and make sure nurses are practicing to their ability (not sure why I have to fund that myself). They just antagonize Nurses.
Then our union is SEIU or at least mine. Like what is their role ? If. I make a med error will they come and protect me? If I am at risk for getting fired will they stick up for me? I am confused as I am getting $37/ each pay cheque and its going to the Union but I have no clue of what their role is.

Each union local has different rules and level of support varies-- a union = YOU and is as strong as the nurses who are involved and work to support it's members.
Visit AN's Collective bargaining + union forum for member advice.
Anytime one has a workplace issue requiring management involvement, you have a right to have union rep present during interview/discussion especially regarding performance. Depending on seriousness of med issue, union may/may not be helpful. Sticking up re risk of getting fired --- yes union should be present throughout the grievance procedure.
Since you don't understand union role, time to schedule a meeting with your union rep/check union website and request/read copy of union agreement to understand your rights, responsibilities and what dues are used for.

You may get some other opinions or discussion, but you will not get a better answer than this.
