After 3 years of floor nursing in almost every specialty I am trying to find a new direction. I need some info on what working in the ER is really like, is it all people who lack common sense or do you get sick people every now and then? The hospital I will be working at is a large level 1 trauma center.
My reason for leaving floor nursing is that I am tired of being run like a dog and having day shift nit-pick everything I did while "caring" for 7 busy patients(very busy neuro-surgery/neuro floor). Am I crazy to think the ER will be better?
1-where else would you meet someone with a GI Joe head in their bum?
2-you will never work with a group of people who are so team-work oriented. In reality, your safety and well being are in their hands. I know that the nuts I work with are like second family to me. I love those goofs.
3-Never the same thing every day. It always changes. Slow and sluggish one minute, and them BAM! Someone is looking to you to get their loved one to breathe again.
4-You can make an immediate difference in someones life.
All in all, you have some really crappy days. But that one time that I saw a beautiful 3 yr old that we had coded when she was 6 mos (SIDS) happy and healthy, made all of the bad days seem like childs play.
It's a great choice!

I love the fast pace and the team work in the ER. There's nothing like it! I used to work full-time in a level II trauma ER, I did get a little burnt out with the adults. I now work full-time Pedi Urgent Care and prn Pedi ER (same hospital) and love it.
