I recently got a job offer at a hospital. I am waiting for my background check to come back so that I can move on with the hiring process. The next step is the "health assessment". I'm supposed to bring my shot record and get a TB test, drug screen and flu shot but what else is there?
Are there things that will keep someone from getting hired? I'm a diabetic but surely there are other diabetic nurses!?

Sometimes you get the physical done by your primary doctor and fax the information to the hospital. Other times the employee health clinic at the hospital does the physical. My physical was done by employee health. It consisted of:
1. Urine drug screen
2. Blood draw for vaccine titers (in addition to providing copies of immunizations)
3. PPD
4. Fitted for N95 respirator mask.
5. Doctor listened to my heart and lungs.
That's all I had to do. Some places also will require you to perform a simple lift test to show that you can safely list the minimum weight required for your job.
Since your diabetes does not affect your ability to perform your job, not hiring you because of it would be discrimination and is illegal. Congrats on your new job!

This varies greatly from employer to employer. Sometimes, it's just a matter of the drug test and PPD; sometimes, they draw routine labwork and check you out on the minimum listed physical requirements of the job; I've been in at least one employment situation where a physician did a complete physical exam.
