Hi to All,
I am hoping there are some LPN's here who are working now or have worked in the prison as a nurse. I would appreciate any info anyone is willing to share about the duties of the prison nurse. I am considering applying for a job in the prison and would like to know more about it.
Thanks so much for any replies.
Sincerely,
PhillysBelladonna

I was a Corrrections Officer before I became a Lpn and im thinking about going back as a lpn. from what i seen, the Lpn's at the prison basically passed out medication all day...I think also depends upon how many inmates are at the prison. The prison I use to work at housed about 2000 inmates or more. The Co would walk around with the lpns while they did pill call. There is also a medical unit for inmates who are too sick to be on the block. The four years that i was there, I've never seen any of the nurses start IV lines or anything too serious. They might of did some womb dressings, BG sticks and paper work. Good luck with it. They also usually pay prison nurses more due to the enviorment.

Go under the specialty section tab here. There is a thread specifically for Corrections Nursing. It'd probably help answer your question. But when I interviewed for a Prison position the above posters description was exactly what they said to expect.

Overall I liked my prison experience, working experience that is. The best part was the variety, I rarely got bored. Job duties ranged from assisting the doctor or PA, passing pills, documenting on patients under medical/psych evaluation, respond to emergencies, drawing labs, assisting and supervising blood sugars and insulin administration, writing responses to immates medical inquiries and schedule appointments. We used to joke that we were like school nurses for grown-ups, because we would have to respond to guys falling on the basketball court and fights, etc. I worked day shift Mon-Fri. I came in counted all of the sharps with the off going shift, take care of some administrative duties, then either I would be responsible for doing all of the labs and documenting on patients or helping the practitioner and putting away and checking in medications when delivered and do blood sugars and insulins. In the evening there was a pill pass, we would rotate between the three different pill passes.
