What classes to take when waiting for admission status?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi,

I'm a CSULB student and I have no idea what to take next semester! After this semester, I will have completed all the pre-reqs for the CSULB Nursing program. Therefore, this semester I am applying to 7 BSN programs including CSULB. Most of the other schools that I'm applying to require Statistics and Human Development (as a cognate course) so I plan to take those two courses next semester (Spring 2012) which are okay to have in progress.

I have no idea what other courses I should take or what I should do in the mean time! I'm a Junior in college and it seem's a little late to declare a minor. My major right now is actually Nutrition and Dietetics, but only because CSULB held a meeting telling the pre-nursing students who are upper division to declare another major. So I've only taken 2 classes that actually count towards this major.

I've thought my options and I can:

1) only take 2 courses next semester and be a part time student (saves money since I won't be paying full time tuition)

2) take the 2 courses plus 2 random easy classes for units to fulfill the unit amount for a full time student

3) take the 2 courses plus 2 classes towards a minor

I just feel like if I get into a nursing program then it would have been a waste to take 2 "filler courses", but then again it's good for security or back up.

What did you guys take or are going to take while waiting to see if you get into a nursing program?

How about 2 courses and a part time hospital job? That is what I would have done while waiting if I could go back. Any job will help you get a feel for the profession, meet lots of interesting people, get your foot in the door and expose you to real life. You will have a huge leg up and feel more comfortable in the healthcare setting once it becomes time to start clinicals. Just a thought. :)

I've been volunteering at the hospital for awhile now and have around 300 hours :) I've thought maybe I should take CNA courses but wouldn't that be a waste if I am just going to aim for a BSN?

What happens if you don't get into a nursing program? You are upping your chances by applying to 7 schools but you never know. Do you have a backup plan? If your backup plan is to graduate with another degree, I'd work towards that.

You could take Pharmacology and/or Pathophysiology, those classes will count towards your BSN degree.

hi nurse2013, Will these classes will be counted toward at least BSN, and possibly other health care major like Health Care Admin? Medical terminology is another good one I think. My kid is at CSULB.thx

Work and take the 2 classes.

Hi GOODMED,

Yes those classes will count towards a BSN degree, just make sure the school will accept the credits as some schools are very particular about what they will accept. As far as health administration, patho and physiology will more than likely not count. I have my masters in Health Administration and we didn't have to take any "science" classes. It was more along the line of management.

In case she cannot get in any program this Fall, then we will have her skip and rest (find work/volunteer and make some fun $$), and apply for Spring. It doesn't make sense to take another major since with her grade and good study, she can get in somewhere.

Well my daughter is ending up repeating Anatomy for this Fall 2015. For Spring 2015, We had applied to CSUCI at Goleta, LB(not yet heard back but not counting), and CSU STAN, but she is put on alternate unfortunately.

She is working 20 hour part-time right now and taking 2 classes: Anatomy and Public Speaking(other CSUs need this class, except CSULB will take small group discussion(waste of time for her)).

During spring 15 while waiting, she will work (more) to pay some expenses(we pay for her apt.), and/ or take some classes but not sure what yet. She mentioned about volunteering also but we are not sure how much that would help her chances as timing is kind late I guess. We might look into taking nursing classes if possible but she has to make sure to get good grades or GPA will suffer. I guess we will play it safe and be very smart on spending time and money on something that should be beneficial in the long run.

I also have another kid who will start CSU this Fall 2015. Besides CSUs (due to competition), as a backup plan, for her I am also looking at UNLV and NSC 2-year BSN programs which look pretty good due to shorter time. Cheers.

I know at my school it's only about 8 more classes to get a second degree in psych because of all the psych we take as pre-reqs. Maybe something like that? Or even just enough to get a minor? I know a lot of people do that when they have extra space while waiting.
