What can i do to prepare for the NCLEX right now?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey everyone,

Taking Bio201 and Mat120 at Maricopa Community Colleges this semester. If all goes well I have a lot of previous college and my pre-requisites and co-reqs may be done by December! Bio201 and MAT120 are gonna be easy for me as I have already taken these in high school and anatomy is highly related to my current work. So I wanted to know since I have a lot of free time what I can do to start preparing for the blocks and sort of be ahead once I am into them. I have about 500 index study cards for the NCLEX that I am going over in my spare time, but what else can be done? Recommended readings? Opportunities to sit in a nursing class? Clinicals? I should also say I work closely now with a lot of nurses and have acquaintances with a few as well. Thanks so much! :D

Get familiar with the NCLEX testing style. If you go into nursing school understanding it, you'll have a leg up on the first few tests. But I can't see studying in-depth being all that helpful - you run the risk of burnout by the time you get through school, you take time away from other things that might be more helpful, and you run the risk of learning things out of context.

If you have the opportunity to volunteer or job shadow in an area other than the one where you currently work, it could be helpful.

Learn a foreign language, preferably one in widespread use in the area you want to work. It will help you get into some nursing schools, increase your hirability, and most importantly, help you in communicating with patients.

Make sure all other degree requirements are out of the way so you don't have to worry about them during the nursing program itself.

IMHO, you can best prepare for the NCLEX by concentrating on your nursing classes NOW. Without that knowledge base to build on, you won't have adequate understanding of NCLEX rationales, theories, etc.

Good luck to you...and don't forget to have fun in NS!!

if you are cool with it, i would pick up a fundamentals book,a and a pharmacology one, since you will have to take these classes, I heard that pharmacology is not easy, and by reading the book, i can tell you that antibiotics are a pain!

so, get going and get reading,

just a tip, since you have all this free time aim for A so you can get your GPA up, so when you get the though classes it wont go down too low!
