I am starting my new graduate nursing position in a few weeks in a large Trauma ICU. I want to be as prepared as possible so I was hoping you guys could give me an idea of what items I should bring with me...I know my stethoscope and pens, but what other items should I bring?? Do I need a fanny pack or something like that to keep my supplies in throughout the shift?
Any suggestions that you guys might have to help me feel prepared and organized will be greatly appreciated!

A penlight is a great thing to have and bandage scissors always come in handy for me. Being that you'll be working in trauma, you'll have a diverse patient load and you'll need lots of different things. A penlight is a must though. Once you work there for a few days, you'll get to know what to bring to make your job easier. Good luck!
Also! Bring healthy drinks and snacks to keep in the fridge. I can't tell you how many times I've been at work and haven't even had time to run to the vending machine!

Bring a little pocket notepad, since you'll be learning a lot all at once. I always carry plenty of alcohol swabs, caps for IV tubing, and claves because trauma pts are always on PCAs and IV fluids! Scissors are also a good suggestion, and a roll of tape.

I definately agree with the positive attitude. I would think that most things that you will need they will have available in the unit (at least my unit stocks penlight, scissors, tape, etc.) ...except a stethoscope and healthy snacks...I would grab some alcohol swabs and stick those in my pocket...I didn't use a note pad or anything of the like but I can see how it might be useful for some...it gives you somewhere handy to write down all that little stuff you need to remember and look back on...
The first couple of days is usually spent getting to know the unit, your preceptor, what the flow is like, paperwork, etc...Just remember to be flexible, stay positive...it will seem like you don't know much but you will learn...most important (IMHO) remember to have fun...

Definitely a penlight! Doesn't matter how many flashlights are supposed to be stocked on the ward - there won't be one when you need it, or there won't be any charged batteries if you do find one. And flashlights are too big and cumbersome for neuro checks.
