What do you bring out during a fire drill?

Published

or essentially what would you bring out in an emergency?

This came up as a parent questioned what would be outside? Do you bring emergency meds (epi pens, diabetic supplies, etc), just emergency contact #s, nothing?

Specializes in kids.

I am in HS

I bring out the emergency contact info, a first aid bag and the Epi Pens and MDIs I have stored in my office. I got a rolling basket from Staples and it holds most of what I need. The rest goees in a large plastic bag I got at IKEA.

Our fire dept stands by for drills with EMS.....my med cart is a push cart that can be brought outside for an extended evacuation (bomb threat)

I also keep a fire drill watch list that lists kids who are risk during an evacuation: those on crutches or wheel chairs, kids with seizure disorders that may be triggered by strobes (they get a firedrill list). Everytime I update the list, I email it to my Principal and Assistant Principal and I print it and put it with emergency info.

The list is in a spread sheet and labels the room and stairwell they are likely to be using at the time of evacuation. They evacuate to their homeroom teacher so that person is identified as well. Those who cannot get down the stairs w/c or not using crutches safely, are given a radio and I am in contact with them so the FD can be directed to them.

FDs are a lot of work!

This is a great question. We've already had two fire drills, and I feel like I'm one of the last ones to leave the building. I have a rolling suitcase type of bin that I put all the meds in. It's already filled to the brim with what I have for meds, and it's only September! I'm afraid stuff will start falling out! I have to bring that, the contact info books (2 large binders), the first aid kit, my stethoscope/BP cuff, the AED and of course, any kids in the clinic. Needless to say, I need help! One of the secretaries in front comes and grabs my books, gear and kids, another grabs the first aid kit and AED and I grab the meds. I already have quite a few meds, and I do worry in a true emergency on my ability to get out in time. The school doesn't have the $$ to buy another rolling cart. I'm on our Safety Committee, and I plan to bring this up at our next Safety meeting.
