What books did you keep??

I am graduating from my RN program in June and I am trying to sell the books I don't think I will need (mostly because I need the cash and because I don't want them lying around). So what books did you keep?? I am thinking Med Surg book, maternal-child book, medical dictionary, med book and labs. Getting rid of psych, pharm, critical care manual, fundamentals, and one infant/child.

I plan on keeping all of mine...I am a hoarder!:gtch:

Me too, Mom35! I can't imagine getting rid of them. You only end up with a fraction of the price you paid if you bought them new. It's not worth it.

Specializes in critical care.

I kept them all; I'm a book geek! But if I had to pare them down to the essentials, I'd keep my med/surg and A&P texts. I've loaned my texts to other students as well; given the cost of the damned things, I like saving someone else the expense!

Got rid of ALL of mine quick. Woulda burned them if I didn't need the money. I sold them all on ebay. I kinda wish I would have held on to my med surg book though.

Keep your books for a couple of years then get rid of them. New discoveries in medicine will even make your basic physiology book obsolete. I suggest that you try to buy a Harrison's textbook of medicine every time a new updated version comes up. I also have several ongoing ED reference texts that I like. I don't bother with nursing med surg textbooks because they are too basic. Before you buy anything, use the internet. I find that I can locate almost everything I need to know on the web and I don't need a book at all.

I thought I would get rid of my books, but found my college library was not interested in keeping a set of books for the students. (forces you to buy them)-so I kept them. I have used them in practice, used them for reference when I write papers, and have used them for court cases regarding nursing standards and "what a prudent nurse would do" I am actually considering purchasing the updated Potter and Perry text. It is invaluable and has been invaluable as I continue schooling.

You'd be surprised how much is forgotton if you don't use it, and many times I have had to refer to a book for a feeding pump or other procedure that I just don't do in the ER. Anyway, if you have the space keep them.

Just my :twocents:

I'll probably keep them all. I can't bring myself to part with ANY books.

Specializes in private duty/home health, med/surg.

I still have all the books I used in my last semester and all of my notes from nursing school! I have occasionally cracked the monster of a med/surg book, but that's it. I just haven't gotten around to getting rid of the rest of the stuff. My suggestion: get rid of the stuff from school and when you decide where you want to specialize, get a certification.
