I started my career 31 years ago in med surg. The reason that I did this was to learn organizational skills. If you can remain organized on a med surg floor, then you can remain organized anywhere. My goal was to work at a VERY LARGE county ED with over 400 patient visits per day, but I knew I needed a foundation first. After a couple of years on med surg I went to the ICU for a couple of years. This gave me a foundation in critical care that I needed. Finally, after about 5 years I went to the ED and never looked back. It was a wonderful experience that I will never forget. ED nursing is my first love. But I am glad that I did preparation work before I transferred there. As a new grad I just would have not been able to properly assess patients in an emergency situation. At triage you need to be able to do a 60 second assessment I could never have done this will my level of experience as a new RN.
