What is the best hospital in Hawaii to work at?

U.S.A. Hawaii

Published

I want to move around and see the country and the world once I am a nurse...and I was interested to know what hospital in Hawaii is the best?

Oh boy.

This is total flame bait. Luckily... you're posting on a nursing forum. So the responses may be only "slightly" biting... =)

Naturally... I think my hospital is the best. And my floor... guess what? Its the best floor in the hospital. And my boss... you got it.

If I couldn't pick my hospital.

Hmmmm...

I guess the safe bet is Queens. Lots of positions. Lots of floors. Lots of opportunities.

:chuckle Great reply, SG!

Seriously, gab.rielle, you can read through lots of threads in all the state forums to start getting answers to your questions. And that includes reading over the Hawaii forum threads too. Happy reading! :nurse:

Well....not totally true.

Lots of positions---pretty much all of them filled.

Lots of floors? Yep. But lately they have been making administrative decisions to close floors partially or entirely when the census drops. That means that nurses are sent home (without pay if they don't have PTO to use) until the census picks up.

Lots of opportunities? Uh....no. Can you say "hiring freeze"? Yep, I thought you could. AFAIK they are still accepting applications but not hiring.

Take a look at the Queens website. Check out the JOBS page. Bear in mind that this section used to have FT nursing openings for just about any area of the hospital---and pages and pages of them. Now there is only a sprinkling of FT openings and most of them are for specialized areas or positions.

Safe bet? Nope. Maybe a few years ago but not now. I suppose things will pick up eventually but for now....the hiring prospects are pretty dismal.

But as far as the "best"? LOL---it's pretty clear that you're happy where you are, Slobgob---so where are you?

Well...

Yeah. The job market ain't what it use to be.

It was tough years ago for new grads... and its only gotten worse. Every single one of us knows that. And of course, Queen's hospital is no exception.

Hiring freezes, low census, mandatory call-off... I think that's an island wide problem and there is very little escape.

Where is she suppose to go?

From my skilled stalker research... i knew: "Well, I am only 17 and a HS senior this year. I am set on my future as a PICU nurse (its my dream)" So... maybe I should have suggested Kapiolani. Should I have suggested St Francis Liliha or West or Kaiser? Will any of them last?

The main point is... I'm suggesting something that is at least 4 years away... That's two more contract negotiations. =) And the one constant is that Queen's hospital is least likely to suffer permanent harm... they just have too much financial backing.

That's my best suggestion in a bad situation.

Hmmm...

*leaving behind my warm nursing heart*

We really need those baby boomers to get old QUICK. >=)

With experience, are there any part-time or prn positions available? Or is the situation pretty much the same? I don't want to offend anyone but I am an army wife and my husband is stationed here. While I understand the need to discourage newcomers from moving here, some of us have to be here. TIA.

i think you've misunderstood the posters' motives. no one is trying to scare away newcomers to protect our jobs - they're just being very realistic about the job market here. it's terrible. new grads are being forced to move to the mainland because NO ONE is hiring. even experienced nurses are unable to find work.

best of luck to you though.

Hey fitness angel! Looks like from other posts of yours that you might not be looking for work here in Hawaii for a year or so. When you come back, check with the military hospitals and clinics; IME they give preference to military spouses. With your year of experience at that time, things may be looking better.

Good luck!:nurse:

nope.

An aide from my floor has worked with us for the last few years. Great guy, hard worker.

Been an RN for almost 1 year now. Applied everywhere. Has good contacts in the hospital. But no job outside per-deim NA.

What did he do last week out of desperation:

Applied for the Army.
