I'm hearing mixed things. I thought nurses make decent pay, but I wa searching thru an old post in 2000, and it was debated that nurses are underpaid!! What is considered underpaid? RIght now I make a measly $18,500/year in human services. I would be happy in the $40,000 range. Is that possibe in nursing?

Yes! I work in an orthopaedic clinic and I make over 40,000. When I worked in the hospital ER I made over 50,000.00. I all depends on your experience and time in service. Good luck!

I graduated last May w/ my ADN... I started in upstate NY (near Canada), I made $19.4hr + shift differential. Moved to PA, outside Philly, made $21.50hr + shift differential, & $23 hr +diff at my current job. So it's decent money to start out, but the pay barely goes up over time, ask some experienced nurses they'll tell you. Look at the shift diffentials... when I started I made $1.50 for evenings, then $2 for nights, where I am now, it's $1.5 for evenings & $5more an hour for nights. I work (3) 12hr shifts per week...if you work a full 40hrs you'd make even more. hope this helps!!!

The Northeast and West pay the best. I know here in Connecticut one major teaching hospital is paying a full-time new grad $50,000 year base.
Go to any search engine and type in nursing salary and you will probably find a site that will tell you what each pay scale is in each state (I cannot remember the name of the site I have used).
Also, hospitalsoup.com is a great site to find all hospitals. Some hospitals have their base pay listed.

The starting salary for NYC nurses is $58,000-$63,000. You should also check salary.com if your interested in working in a different area.

I just signed my contract for a position as a new grad, starting pay $54,000/year. I live in northern NV and it's fairly expensive to live here (decent housing starts around $325,000).

My understanding is that New York pays more than other areas of the country. I'm in Florida and almost made $60,000.00 last year. Good luck to you!
When nurses say they are underpaid, it's not fair to compair salaries. Nursing is a tough, dirty, demanding, sometimes demoralizing job. Many people say we're underpaid for these reasons. But we don't get much sympathy from other jobs where they pay is lower. Personally, I have no qualms about my pay. $60,000 for an associate degree is sweet.
