What area of nursing should I try next?

Published

I have been working in the ICU for the past 6.5 years (all of my nursing career). I also have cath lab and echo lab experience. I love my patients dearly, but my body is getting tired. I'm tired of patients getting IV lasix and needing to get up and down to the bedside commode multiple time per shift. Its not easy to do something simple like go to the bathroom in the ICU when you are hooked up to continuous cardiac monitoring, have 2 IVs hooked up, have 2 chest tubes, a Davol, and a Jp drain plus a PEG tube with tube feeds going in, all of that tangeld up with your covers, call light and suction. I'm tired of moving very heavy patients. I'm tired of patients telling me to hurry up, when giving pain meds or getting them up to the bathroom. I'm also tired of having confused/agitated head injury patients who fight me and try to pull out everything and end up in restraints. I'm doing the best I can but I'm getting burned out. I want to take care of patients who aren't hooked up to a bajillion things all tangled up. I need more patients who are more independent than this. Can you guys suggest another area of nursing I should try?

I work ER and several of my coworkers have an ICU background. I rarely lift patients and because of the constant turnover even the annoying ones are only there for a few hours.
