WGU RN-BSN December 2017. Advice/support appreciated!

Nursing Students Western Governors

Published

Hello fellow nurses!

I'm quickly approaching my start date....school again, after 17+ years! I'm super excited and a bit nervous of course. Any current or recent students have any helpful advice to throw my way? I know there's the new intro class & biochem format. I also have to take good 'ol statistics, which will be a first for me. I'm hoping to finish my BSN in 1 year (2 terms), and I believe I have 43 credits. Thanks for any feedback or advice!

Hi I had a question regarding tuition, do they ask for the full payment upfront? Or do they offer payment plans?

Hey there,

Yes, they do have a 4 part payment plan option. They just charge a $55 fee to set that up. If your employer offers tuition assistance, that's a great option to help also.

I just started orientation today! Did you? We'll make it though...hopefully getting familiar with the system will ease your stress a bit. I'm honestly most worried about the statistics & biochem. They are going to be very difficult for me...

thanks for the reply. How do you like the program so far? I plan to start hopefully in January

Oh nice! I just barely submitted my transcripts today. Yes, we will make it through. Im barely finishing statistics as we speak, i still have to take a history class but I'm not sure if they're going to allow me to take that class while in the program. I asked my counselor but he never really gave me a straight answer. haha

Today was just my first day of orientation...I start Dec 1st officially. I'm also taking US Government within the program, so I'll have a total of 4 gen ed classes to bust out before the nursing courses. I'll be keeping busy!

Specializes in ED.

I started in July and have completed 18 credits so far. I'm going to try to knock out health assessment before my term ends. Care of the Older Adult, Nutrition, and Information Management can all be done in a day, maybe two. Stats and biochem took me longer, which I figured, so I requested that my SM separate them with an easier course. I'm aiming to finish in 9 months.

Nice! Did you transfer some general ed credits also or did u start from the beginning?

I started the RN to BSN program through on Oct 1, after completing my ASN last year. A lot of my classes transferred, leaving me with 15 classes to take, and I have completed 9 of them, and am in the process of completing 2 more. As others have said, it all depends on your level of knowledge, and how well you do with online learning, with no one telling you how or when something has to be done. Well, the grading rubrics and help documents do tell you how, so follow them exactly. But the best advice I can give... don't read too much into it!!! Know what you already know, learn what you need to learn, and move on. These courses are not intended for you to completely master every concept, but to ensure you have a basic knowledge of the concepts necessary to advance. Just because there are readings and exercises listed, does not mean they have to be done. Do what you have to do to learn the material, and move on. For the general education courses, the course is boiled down to one objective assessment, somewhere between 50 and 70 questions. If you actually think about it, there is not enough space for them to spend more than a question or 2 on a particular topic. So if something is hard for you, and you just don't get it, move on, and see if you can continue without it. If it isn't something you need to build on the next topic, it is just sort of extra. I am not in any way saying don't learn the material... but this is how I learn. You have to find what works for you, and most of the course mentors will say the same. People are always in the course chatter asking tedious questions about things so minute, that it is difficult to see how they are even relevant, and the mentors try to bring them around to the concept of grasping basic concepts, rather than mastering them all. If you want to learn everything about everything, then this program may not be the best choice for you. But if you want a BSN without spending months on material you already understand, then it will be amazing, as it has been for me!!!

Biochem was one that I worried about too, and so far, has been the hardest class I have taken. So much info in such a short amount of time. I honestly can't even give any real tips on that one, because I passed by the skin of my teeth I feel from several good guesses, lol. But do the study organizers and the quizzes, and if you learn by lectures, do the cohorts. DON'T READ TOO MUCH INTO ANYTHING!!! If it isn't in the study organizer, you won't see it again. And they give you the answer key... so if you learn by memorization, you can just read the info with their answers instead of searching for them.

Stats was kind of a joke... I was so stressed out about it, and then finished in less than a week, and I am not even good at math. The math portion of it is pretty basic algebra, and the rest is charts and graphs and reading the data. I just did a few practice problems in each section til I got the concept, then moved on. The last module, to be honest, I didn't even barely do anything.... based on the pre-assessment, I knew I could still pass even if I didn't get those ones, lol. And again, don't read into the material.... the idea is not to know everything, but to understand very BASIC concepts to pass a test.

Hope this helps!!!!

Is there an expiration date for the general ed classes? I couldn't find that answer on their website. Thanks again for all the info!! Very much appreciated. I'm pretty worried for biochemistry

I started orientation today, but working tonight so I could not finish today. I am also nervous about biochem and stats. I kinda want to do one of those first to get It out of the way, but I am not sure how they decide what order classes are to be taken. Guess I will find out soon! í ½í¸Š
