Is anyone familiar with Western Governors University online MSN programs? Seems a little too good to be true at $3250 per 6 month term.

Thanks,

I just began my degree at WGU. I am actually in their MBA program rather than the Master's in Nursing program, but my tuition was a flat rate of $3,250 for 6 months (it doesn't include books and a library fee, so you do have to take that into account). I chose WGU because I want to see if I can complete my degree in a year *fingers crossed.* My enrollment counselor told me that it wouldn't cost more for me to do the extra work during the term, I work full time, so I hope I can find the time to get everything done early!
Good luck to you!

Thanks, I look forward to it. We had a couple classes online in my BSN program. One was well taught, another poorly. I'm not a big fan of online ed but I can't take time from work now. And I want to go at my own speed, meaning if it takes 3 years or more to get an MSN that's how I want to do it.

I am currently enrolled in the MSN Education Program at WGU and the price of the tuition is correct. I am currently finishing my first term and it has been a wonderful experience. After being a nurse for 20 years I decided to go back for my master's and grow personally and professionally. WGU has been a positive experience for me and the mentors are great and very helpful. They have answered all my questions and concerns. Hope this helps with your decision.

Yes,:nuke: I was thinking the same thing and had the same question. Thanks again
How is the online study material? And are the classes transferable. Since I see positive feed back I'm really considering to apply. Even if it isn't transferable as long as the university is accredited and excepted, I still would apply. I'VE been looking at the prices of other schools and all of them are very costly. I often wonder how they think a nurse could afford to go back to school with the prices so high. Most jobs pay a very small percent . But, yet most places now days want nurses to have or get their BS degree
WGU is regionally accredited and currently seeking CCNE accreditation. Since BSN and MSN nursing programs seeking accreditation are strongly advised to use the AACN Essentials during program development, there is much similarity between programs.
Transferability depends on the accepting institution. Sometimes the AACN Essentials material is grouped differently than another institution so transfer becomes an issue. Some institutions do not transfer in upper degree courses.
Learning materials are online and designed to guide self-learning to meet competiencies. Mentors work with you on a regular basis. Sometimes students are required to go to a testing center for proctored objective exams. Usually the testing site (public library, coleges, Sylvan, Prometric, etc.) is within driving distance.
I hope I answered your questions.

My advice to the OP:
Be very careful with an online universities that are based on life experience and competency. I've come across such stories as this one in USA Today.
A lot of the online schools for life-experience are accredited by the International Accreditation Agency for Online Universities (IAAOU) and the Universal Council for Online Education Accreditation (UCOEA). Neither the IAAOU or the UCOEA are accredited by the U.S. Dept of Education.
WGU doesn't claim accreditation by these agencies, and I spoke with a specialist at the United States Department of Education (1-800-USA-LEARN) who said the school is legit.

Hi Jan,
Who do prospective students contact about the MSN program completion requirements (e.g. clinical hours, preceptorship, etc.) besides the enrollment counselors?

Hi Meg,
Is there a main person to talk to about specific MSN program completion questions (such as clinical hours, etc.)?
Has anyone finished the entire MSN program at WGU yet?
Hi Laurie
As a matter a fact yes several MSN students have completed the WGU program and graduated this past July. I am currently finishing up my final paper and will be finished by Decemeber.
Did you go to the WGU website as they have a contact an enrollment counselor for questions? They were a tremendous help when I enrolled 2 years ago. Ask if you can speak to someone in the nursing department or if you have further questions I can try to answer them.
