Western Governors University (WGU) Readiness Assessment

The Western Governors University (WGU) Readiness Assessment is a pre-entrance exam that assesses a prospective student's preparedness for university-level coursework. This piece is intended to serve as a guide on what an individual can reasonably expect to encounter while taking this assessment. Nursing Students Western Governors Article

() is an increasingly popular online school because it offers various features that appeal to adult learners. Some of these appealing features include very affordable tuition, nonprofit status, multiple choices of majors and concentrations, legitimate accreditation, and an innovative competency-based model that facilitates swift degree completion.

Since WGU is designed for the adult learner who already possesses some experience with coursework at the college level, prospective students are not required to take the traditional collegiate entrance exams such as the SAT or ACT. Instead, the school requires all applicants to take and pass the WGU Readiness Assessment, which is an unproctored online exam that assesses a potential student's academic preparedness for university-level coursework. This assessment should not be taken lightly because applicants who do not pass it will not be admitted. The WGU Readiness Assessment is broken up into four separate sections. Prospective students may start with any section they choose.

Language Test

The language portion is a multiple choice exam that determines the applicant's skill level in essential topics such as reading comprehension, grammatical usage and writing. The test taker will need to answer questions after reading paragraph-long passages, select the one grammatically correct sentence out of four or five selections, and know the difference between passive and active voice. This portion contained about 30 questions and had a two hour time limit.

Math Test

The math portion is a multiple choice exam that assesses the applicant's skill level in basic topics such as arithmetic, estimation, and graphs. The test contains several word problems and perhaps one or two elementary algebraic questions. The test taker will need to be familiar with topics such as fractions, decimals, percentages, probability, absolute value, integers, plotting lines on graphs, answering word problems, symbols, the order of operations, and prealgebra. This portion contained about 20 questions and had a two hour time limit.

Admissions Inventory

This portion has an assortment of questions to help assess whether online learning is a suitable option for the prospective student. Some people learn independently with ease while others desperately need the structure of a brick-and-mortar classroom with a professor directly in front of them for guidance. This section of the WGU Readiness Assessment assists in determining if the prospective student has the self-motivation, tools and prior experiences to perform satisfactorily in online learning.

Essay Exam

Prospective students must write an essay on a randomly selected topic. Since WGU's academic programs involve numerous essay submissions, this portion of the readiness assessment examines the applicant's writing skills. Essays with less than 200 words or more than 800 words are disallowed, so the test taker must carefully monitor this aspect while writing. It is permissible to type the paper elsewhere before pasting it onto the exam. The benefit of copying/pasting is that it allows the test taker to run a spell check and word count before submitting. WGU's website advises applicants to set aside up to one hour to type and submit their essays.

Guide to the WGU Readiness Assessment

UPDATE: I called my former school of nursing and asked to speak to the person who handles transcript requests. After being connected, I explained that I mailed a transcript request form (with payment) on March 10th and was wondering if she received it. After fumbling for a while, she says she received it, but "Keep in mind all transcript requests require 48 hours to process." I reminded her it had been two weeks. Good grief!

That's so frustrating. The same thing happened to me. I was told up to 48 hours to process. I ordered them on 3/9 but they did not get mailed until 3/18. I followed up with my enrollment counselor who says it doesn't seem like they have received it yet. I'm hoping it gets there and they process it soon because I'm really aiming for a May 1 start date. *fingers crossed*

Yes, me too. Although I will settle for a June 1st start date, I'd really like to start on May 1st. And in order for a May 1st start date to become a reality, the rest of my transcripts need to reach by the middle of next week.

I suppose this month is a somewhat busy time for transcript requests at schools across the country since some students are attempting to transfer their records to different institutions. Also, schools across the country are being inundated with transcripts from students who are trying to gain admission.

Finally all my transcripts have arrived at . Now I hope that WGU remembers that I told them that the school I attended for my associates changed names. They were originally still looking for transcripts from that school, not realizing they had them. My enrollment counselor said he would let them know about the name change. Now that they have arrived, he can get my final decision. I would really like to start May 1st. All my financial aid stuff is completed and checked off in the financial aid tab of the My WGU page. Here's to all of us starting in May!!

Yay! I'm hoping to start May 1st RN to BSN with everyone, too! I received my provisional acceptance email and just waiting for my background check and immunization records (I'm in CA) to be processed. I haven't been this excited to start school since my ADN program over 10 years ago. :). I've been really impressed with the application process. I originally applied to University of Texas Arlington back in Jan. and they still haven't reviewed my transcripts. I was so frustrated but I'm happy that I found out about !

Congrats! I'm trying to do my immunization records too (also from CA). When I tried to register for ITS it's asking me for a student ID but I don't have one yet. Did you have to ask your enrollment counselor for it? Thanks!

I found my student ID located on my transfer (transcript) evaluation form. It's in the upper right hand corner. Congrats to you, too!

Yay, I finally got my provisional acceptance email. I had a background check done last June or Julywhen I transferred to my current job, I am going to ask my enrollment counselor if this will suffice or if I have to get another. I have already completed the financial aid information so have to schedule my intake interview. I am so ready to get this going.

Awesome! I bet you will have to get a new background check. I think it cost $40.

Just heard from my enrollment counselor, you are right, I do need to get another one. We already have an appt to talk tomorrow and we are turning that into the intake interview. Now just waiting to hear the results of my transcript eval.

Yay! Another Cali RN. Don't worry about the readiness exam. The Commuter did a great job at outlining what to expect. I'm not a math wizard, so I spent a few days on Khan Academy (as others recommended) and reviewed the basics and pre-algebra. Definitely review order of operations, fractions, decimals, and very basic geometry (perimeter & area).

Just a heads up, when you get around to the immunization verification (for CA residents) start working on it right away. Your EC will email the link for completing this and a background check near the end of the application process. They wouldn't accept any of my documents from work showing compliance of flu shots, PPD, etc. It needs a Provider's signature on everything using their actual form. I have a Kaiser appt today just to get my form signed off from my primary MD and luckily my start date is May 1st or I would be stressed out trying to get this squared away. Just want other CA RNs to know not to wait til last minute to do this.
