West Penn School of Nursing?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Has anyone attended the western Pennsylvania School of Nursing? If so id like to know if you liked it and why and would you recommend it to me as a male?

Thanks everyone!!!;)

I got my acceptance letter Thursday!!! Looking forward to getting started!!! Who needs free time anyway? Right?

Hey everyone! My name is Katie, and I was accepted in November to West Penn also! I'm eighteen and am super nervous/excited! I was really hoping to meet some friends before going just to make myself a little less nervous! Did anyone else get their letter to RSVP for the Pre-Registration Program in July?

I received the textbook listing for year one yesterday in the mail. After a quick check on amazon.com, all of the books including a couple of inexpensive study guides that could accompany some of the texts top out at about $930 if anyone is interested. I'm curious to see the rates from the campus book seller.

Funny story I actually posted on my facebook page yesterday... so prior to the mail showing up I had tried to contact the book company that will be at our orientation to find out roughly how much the books would cost. They were closed for the day. Check out this amazing schedule as per their voice mail:

M -- Closed

Tu -- Closed

Wed -- noon to 2:00 p.m.

We are all apparently in the wrong profession.

Out of all the books on our list my personal favorite is the Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing, North American Edition... you can get this in two volumes or one. If you get it in one volume it is 2776 pages and weighs in just over 11 lbs!!! I think I'm going to go with the two volume set. Apparently I will be using my Alaskan Malamute sled dog to carry my books around.

Does anyone have any idea about the cable situation in the dorms? I want to bring a television, not that i'll use it much but just to have, but if they don't have cable than there's no point in wasting space.

This just in... West Penn Hospital will be closing it's ER in January 2011.

hey guys, I'm Sara and I'm going to West Penn in the fall too!!! :D I'm living down there, and basically making school my life for two years...yay! i'll be at the registration on july 10th, so that's exciting too..

Alyson, if you get this, sorry I've been out of touch! I just can't figure out how to respond to your messages... and spent the last week going to funerals because three of my friends were killed in a car accident on Saturday. soooo yeah. How's life? I hope everything's good... sorry this is the only way i can get a hold of you.. lol.. let's be freaking facebook friends reallly soon!

Sara,

And I'm sorry to hear about your friends:( but happy to see that you got accepted!!!:yeah:and you can look me up on facebook.. my last name is gamble!!!... I'm so excited for nursing in the fall... even though i won't be living there i'm gonna be up there all the time with you and kayla and everyone!!! I'm so excited!!! no potentially libelous information about specific schools, instructors, or health care facilities/entities should be posted in these forums. while it is important to be able to network, everyone should be mindful of the following:

  1. it is a small world - when we narrow it down to a state and throw in some personal info, there is actually a pretty good chance someone may recognize you if you are not careful. your privacy is paramount to us.
  2. while this site is a wonderful place to vent (without excess personally identifiable details) it is not the place to express why ("x" specific person, place or program) is terrible. gripe away, but since we cannot permit allegations to be made about named entities, your care in not naming them is very much appreciated.
  3. please do not give out personal information about others. do not name names where anyone could identify the person in any facility including your nursing programs.

good luck to all ...west penn son has a great reputation.

I got a letter from WPSON about the Summer Enrichment Program. As you read through the letter there is a remark about

[...] if you attend the entire day you would earn one hour of your required community time for this year.

Does anyone have any more information about this required community time? I can't recall coming across this anywhere while obviously I may have just overlooked it.

I believe there are 4 community hours that need to be fulfilled each year. (I'm a WPSON 2009 grad) I can't remember the exact hours. I do know that most people did attend the summer enrichment. It's a good way to get to know your classmates and if nothing else you'll feel way more comfortable in the school when mandatory orientation rolls around. So it's a good way to knock of one of those hours.

Good luck to all. I think WPSON is a very supportive place as well as provides a great start to build on. I'm sad with the hospital developments, b/c it's a wonderful school.

Does anyone know the day we move in? I don't know if I just overlooked the date or if it really isn't posted anywhere...?
