West Coast University graduates

Published

Hey, I'm considering applying to WCU (specifically their LA campus.) I'd love to hear any and all first hand experiences from graduates of their BSN program. I'm generally very skeptical of for-profit schools, but I've come across some good experiences with their program so I'm curious to hear more.

Hi I am a current student at west coast university. I am finishing my second term. I start nursing core in June so I can only speak for my general education experience so far. It is not a bad school but it is very expensive. Some professors are good some are bad like at any school. The classes are blended in an online and in class format. And they generally meet once a week unless you have a science class with a lab then you meet twice a week. There are tutoring resources available to take advantage of to help you through your classes, as it is an accelerated program. Each term is 9 weeks of instruction and week 10 is finals. It all goes by very fast but as long as you stay on top of studying and your work you will adjust fine. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Good luck with your first term!

is it possible to work during the program since it is kind of long?

It is possible to work I know a lot of people that do. But most people have to cut back on their hours once they begin nursing core. It all depends on you and if you can juggle both a demanding fast paced program and working.

Yea you could do that. Thank you ! I'm a little nervous about nursing core but excited to finally be done with GE classes. Good luck to you too ! And if you have anymore questions feel free to ask!

I work full time and would need to request my days off... My first class is first year seminar, (psychology and English II is online)I’m scared , I want to be prepared... I can’t seem to get ahold of my advisor right now ??‍♀️... what about getting a tour of where everything is at once becoming a student ?? Thank you !!

That's great congrats! Your online classes will be available on blackboard like any other on ground course you take. Your blackboard classes wont open till a week before the class starts. Your admin advisor will tell you when your schedule is up for viewing. I would say in the next week or so. Then you will know when your first year seminar class is scheduled. Oh and dont worry about the room number not being listed. They post a paper on the wall right when you walk in so you will know where the class is. There is no tour of where things are really but the first week of the term there are people who can tell you where things are. And other students are helpful. Its not very big so don't worry about that.

Hey,

I graduated from WCU north hollywood in 2017. Honestly, the program did the job. There are teachers that are better than others and etc, but that's how it probably is everywhere. You have to have the self control and motivation to study. I felt prepared for the NCLEX and felt that the staff was helpful. For BSN, if you can go elsewhere you should. ONLY because of the price. If you can save money, save money! There are many who had to get a private loan and are struggling to pay it off, it's doable if you can get it covered with federal loans alone.

Besides that, people do kind of look down at WCU. It does have a reputation of "oh you bought your degree". It is getting better though. I fortunately did not have a hard time and was able to get into a new grad residency program after school, but just keep that in mind.

Overall though, I would recommend the school if you can't get in elsewhere and don't want to be waitlisted elsewhere foreevvverr.

Hi guys I am starting nursing core January 2020, but I have two terms of GE's beforehand. Im taking fys, oral communication, and lifespan psych in the first term and then patho, critical reasoning, and ge capstone. Does anyone have books I could buy from them? Or tips/tricks to get by with these classes? I am nervous because i've heard it's not worth buying the book voucher plan from WCU.

Also, has anyone taken these classes before who could tell me how often I would meet? or if working is possible while taking these courses

The first term will be easy with fys speech and lifespan. Patho is alot of studying and it is very time consuming with all of the assignments that are required. Like most other classes you will have a quiz every week and a midterm and final. Each quiz is about 4-5 chapters. And midterm and final are accumulative. Capstone is just a writing class not hard just a lot of busy work. And critical reasoning is not too difficult either. It is possible to work you just have to manage your time.

As for tips I would say get a set schedule as for studying and homework. Its very fast paced and you have to stay on top of everything so you don't fall behind. Patho is the hardest class you will take and for that I say review your physiology it helps a lot. And focus on the professors lectures dont spend too much time reading the book. It is a lot of info and it just makes you more overwhelmed. And understand the material dont just memorize.

As for class times in general education every class meets once a week for 3 and half hours. (except for classes with labs they meet twice a week ). As for the book vouchers.... yes their bookstore is more expensive. But you can get the vouchers because if you choose not to use them they roll over toward your tuition for the next year. I also have a critical reasoning book I can sell to you. I can private message you my email.

Thank you for the great advice. Would you say if you study the lectures you’ll pretty much do well in the class? I’ve taken 8 week science course and i felt like this may be a similar pace

Yes if you study you will do fine. If you have taken 8 week science course you will do fine at this school.

Thanks for the advice! I have to go there because I live about 3 hours away in a very small community and it is very very hard to get into any programs around here...which is about 3 local with at least being an hour away from where I live...I did not get in last year or this year so WCU was my last resort... I am excited though! All my prereqs transfered over so i just need to take a second psychology class and a second english class that i didnt take for bachelors... plus the ones you can only take there.. any other advice would be very helpful, i will have to relocate part time down there for school. How are the clinical's and how many days of the week? Thanks! I also was wondering about online classes, my first 2 I requested to take online.

As for buying books you could try any discount college book website like chegg, valore, amazon etc. This term I used amazon. You can use the school bookstore but most of the time the books are more expensive.

During orientation it was just basic stuff like how to use blackboard and an overview if the school rules.

I have not taken an online class at west coast but all of our classes are "blended" online and in class format. So I would imagine it is similar. You would have discussion boards, papers to write and stuff like that. From what I have heard the online classes tend to be easier than the on ground classes.
