Hi Everyone,
I got a 75% on my TEAS V test. I know I needed to get at least 85% on my Teas V score to be competitive on most BSN programs.
I found out that West Coast University is now accepting Teas V scores with a minimum score of 58%. So with a 75% score on the Teas V, I was a qualified applicant and I didn't have to take their HESI exam.
Once you're qualified based on taking their HESI or Teas V, the biggest qualifying factor you have is getting approved for Financial Aid or Private Student Loans. If you have all your finances straight, then that's when they secure your spot in their Nursing Program.
However, my biggest gripe right now and most of the students that I have spoken with is that they have a weird system of transferring credits. Each student I spoke to had different experiences on what classes transferred to that school and what didn't.
For example, WCU transfered all of my science classes that I took at Los Angeles Valley College:
Anatomy
Physiology
Microbiology
Psychology - Intro
Psychology - LifeSpan
BUT, they didn't transfer my General Chemistry.
They transfered my CAL STATE LA:
English 101/102 but they said that both my English 101/102 class that I took only transfers over to their English 140 Written Communication I, but not to their English 140 Written Communication II.
They also didn't transfer the following G.E. classes that I took in CAL STATE LA:
Philosophy
College Mathematics
Public Speaking
Their reason is that CAL STATE LA is a Quarter system and WCU is a Semester system. This is how they calculate it: 1 quarter unit = 0.67 semester unit
In addition, if they don't think your class is equivalent to their class they won't accept it as transfer credit.
My biggest advice is to go to their transfer credit website: 4
Sorry, for a really late reply. My tuition turned out to be $101,000. It pretty much knocked down $19,000. I have the same problem with math too. I was disappointed my math didn't transfer and its because its not a college math but already passed stats last semester...which confused me bcz college math is lower than stats. They told me it has to say college math but when I look at the class description is exactly the same content. I was going to challenge the math exam to avoid taking the class but last minute I change my mind bcz don't want to stress over it so I'm taking the course :-(.
hello! i appreciate that you've been so informative in regards to the transfer credits. I, too, am on the same boat. I just took the HESI exam and passed. Now, my concern is being able to transfer some of my credits that i took from CSULA as well. CSULA screwed me over with the school just being a "Quarter system." I was not able to transfer any of my courses to any other schools that offered RN programs, which left me no choice but to apply and enroll at WCU. A lot of my science courses that i have taken at CSULA have expired (over 5 years), and now that you mentioned that WCU did not transfer any other courses besides your science. That means i'm going to be in debt for a very long time! all these years wasted going to CSULA and none of these classes are being honored, really upsets me! anyway, i'm glad that the classes that you're taking at WCU are okay. i apologize, i just had to rant. but i really do wish you well on your journey to becoming a BSN! good luck!
I am a current WCU student about to enter OB/Peds rotation. Some words of advice to everyone... DO NOT FAIL any classes. Save the fails for around Med Surg 2 when it gets crazy. I have not failed anything and do not plan on it, but it is nice to know that I have a "cushion". I have lost MANY friends starting in Med Surg 1, and every term we lose a few more. It is very difficult. I have learned so much and I love it, but be prepared to hand over your life to this school once core starts! It goes by so fast, I have less than a year left now. Good luck everyone!!! :)
Hi Sweet charm,
I have a previous B.S. degree and they don't take that into account. They don't offer an Accelerated BSN program. I would check with WCU if they will accept the classes you're taking at community college as transfer credit. Because it would be a waste of time if you took them at CC and have to redo them at WCU because they didn't deem it transferable.
Has anyone actually transferred classes to west coast university from a community college? I used the TES system they have on their website to check for classes that would transfer but as soon as I showed that to them they told me that the system is not accurate. They lost my transcripts and made my order new ones, 1 week before the term was going to begin I still had no classes because my classes were not yet evaluated and that friday (which was the last day for anything to be evaluated) they email me with classes that will not transfer but they forget to include 2. Now they are telling me my philosophy 6 class (which is a critical thinking class) is not upper division and will not transfer? and that my chemistry class is not equivalent, although it stated online that it will transfer and we used the same exact book for the course.
Has anyone taken a philosophy class that transferred here? or chemistry? Im really frustrated with this school and do not know if I was to go ahead and begin this week.

I am starting the application process for WCU to begin in April and my philosophy class didn't transfer either and it's the exact same title. I'm not sure why this is, but it sure is frustrating.
Also, is it true it's harder to get a job after graduating from west coast because employers look at it as we paid our way through nursing school and we aren't trained well enough?
That's why I'm hearing.
If anyone has any knowledge or experience about this let me know!! Also any tips or advice about the program!! thanks :)

Yeah I wouldn't worry about the negative feedback about WCU. Because I think those are students that thought they were going to get a BSN degree easily by just paying lots of money for it. That is not the case, WCU is definitely any other BSN program that offers competitive and great Nursing Program. The people that complain about it are the one's that slack off and didn't make the cut.
WCU nurses are also getting good reputation from hospitals.
My tuition with my 7 of my classes transferring over was 112k. You can also start paying off the interest rate on your loan monthly so all you have to worry about paying off is the capital once you're done with school.
My actual nursing cohort starts in April 2014. I still need to take some prerequisites that didn't transfer over such as:
Chem
English Comp II
Critical Thinking
Cultural Pluralism
Pathophysiology
Statistics
One thing I did notice is that these prerequisite classes in WCU all relate towards nursing. Which is a good thing =)
