Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, but may possibly be a classmate of yours so I thought I'd introduce myself! I'm not quite sure if I'll be attending Yale yet as there are many factors I still have to weigh out... but either way, it's nice to quasi-meet you all. I'm 21 years old and from California and will be in the FNP specialty.

May I ask what helped you all choose Yale? Was it always your number 1 choice or did you experience something special at the interview day? I was a bit out of it (sick) on interview day so I wasn't as social and outgoing as I would have liked to be...

Congratulations to each and every one of you as well! I'm so excited for all of us.

yale was always my first choice school, but columbia was a close second. i did get into columbia, but after yale interview day i was positive that it was the place for me...but i didn't know if i would be able to pay for it...

columbia's financial aid sucks (imo) but who knows, yale's might be just as bad! :uhoh3:

it's a hard decision, i know, good luck with it!

hey bics and everyone else...yeah, well i live in new haven so if you want help as you look for houses let me know. you are katie right? we met on interview day with krystell.

anyhow, for anyone out there...i live in westville now, have lived there for a while and grew up in the area. the info that lauren gave is right. yale students tend to live in the east rock neighborhood because it is on the shuttle route. it is a nice older neighborhood like westville but because is is widely know that this is refered to as the "grad ghetto" there are a lot of robberies in this neighborhood. so if your goal is to be in a younger neighborhood with lots of other students as easy access to campus, downtown and some great bars, that is a great neighborhood. it is a little pricey because they know students will pay it. parking is usually on street and i believe you do not need permits for most areas, but if you find an apartment you like, be sure to ask. and if you do decide to live there be sure to get an apartment that is not on the first floor.

downtown is also great. very lively, right in the heart of old campus so historic and fun. having a car here will get expensive as most apartment complexes do not include parking and street parking is metered. rents downtown are much higher.

i would suggest not living directly near the nursing school or the medical campus. there is drug and gang violence in some of these areas. not that you won't be safe going to and from school at any time. the area is very high traffic, but as you get into some of the side street neighborhoods it can get kind of dicey. just my opinion.

then westville, where i live. it is a bit further from campus about a 10 minute drive in rush hour traffic. it is located right near yale's athletic fields (the yale bowl, baseball field, track, and tennis center) the neighborhood is quiet and a mix of younger (our age) people and young families. there are always people walking around, everyone smiles and says hi. it is nice. my rent is currently $700 for a third floor, 2 bedroom apartment with electricity included. so that is less that what lauren quoted. and you can certainly find rents like that near me. parking is again on the street usually, but depending on the house, you may be allowed to use the driveway. but i never have a problem getting a spot right in front of my house. the apartments are all older so if what you seek is a new modern apartment i would suggest looking downtown and paying a bit more.

also do not feel trapped into new haven. there are many surrounding suburbs with easy access to the nursing school. so really just think about the type of neighborhood you will feel most comfortable in and feel free to ask me or current students their opinions on what is a good fit.

so that is my two cents...or more. if as you all look online and what not you find something, let me know the address and i will check it out for you. i know some of you are far away and i totally have no problem helping out! just ask!

Hello!! just to build on Kel8ley's post:

As most of you already know, I will be going to Columbia in the fall... But, I currently work in New Haven and live in a town called Branford. Branford is about 10-15 minutes from the SON. It takes me about 12 minutes to get to work at 7 am and my work is a mile from the SON. My rent is currently $1100, but it is a 1200 sq. ft. , 2 bedroom, 2 full bath tri-level condo with a one car garage, one car driveway and plenty of extra parking. There is also a lot of storage space. You would definitely need a car if you were to live here, though. If you have family or want to have a lot of space for a roommate situation, this area would be great. Also, there are a couple of town beaches and some nice walking areas.

Just thought I'd give you another perspective...

I hope that you are all doing well. Let me know about the financial quote that Yale gives you for the year (just curious as compared to Columbia). :rolleyes:

omgosh won't the financial aid packets come already??!!!?!?!? i am soooo anxious. i feel like i can't celebrate yet. everyone keeps asking and i keep saying i'm going, but still...i have yale gear already, and i haven't worn it yet, feeling like i might kinx it!!! :roll

Hey Guys so I got my financial aid packet yesterday, anyone else? What do you all plan to do to cover the costs? Are you applying for outside scholarships or taking out private loans?

I haven't got mine yet, Kel8ly, what part of the country do you live in? I'm in Nebraska!

I will take all of the federal loans and scholarship they give me, and then I will be paying cash...

Was it what true to what they said it would be at the interview? (ie:scholarship)???

yeah, i'm also wondering where the heck mine is--I wonder if i sent everything in!? Just the Yale app. and FAFSA, right? Also, Columbia just sent me a whole bunch of stuff but not a financial aid packet! What the Heck!?
