Weekend package

Does anybody work a weekend package position - 12 hours shifts Friday, Saturday, Sunday? I recently got an offer for this. I am a mom of a two year old. It would cut our day care costs by $500/month. The only day my son would need daycare is on Fridays for 5 hours and this is already arranged. We just recently bought our first house also. My significant other/Dad is on board with this and we are both willing to make the sacrifice until our son gets into school. To be at home 4 days a week to raise my son would mean everything to me!

Right now, I am working Monday-Friday. I despise my current job/organization. I am have been with them for 5 years and have been in my current role as a case management nurse for two years *attempting* to build up a Chronic Care Management Program... that I feel is not going anywhere. I pretty much set my own hours and can work from home, when I want or need. But that is not appealing to me anymore. I would love to basically have my cake and eat it too! Raising my son, so he is not in daycare all week would be a blessing.

The position would be back in the hospital on a rehabilitation (physical medicine) unit. I did get a tour of the unit. I also was floated to the unit when I was a CNA many years ago. They have seasoned staff (25+ years) and the unit is also the hospital's dedicated learning unit, so I would still get the ability to teach CNA/PCT's and maybe eventually other nurses after a while. As I previously mentioned, I am currently in a case management roll building a program that I feel is going no where. There is RARELY hands on patient care as most of it is phone based. We are an FQHC and serve the underinsured, homeless population where many of them cannot get to the clinic due to financial concerns, public transportation and/or do not drive. I am ready to be back in the hospital setting with hands-on patient care.

Pros and Cons? Has anyone worked this shift? It would be 7a-7p.

I've not done this and my misgivings would be related to working three 12s in a row and working every single weekend. How energetic are you and how active is your child? Because on Mondays you will likely crash and burn. That gives you three quality days at home, before you have to start over. Will that work for you? Twelve hour shifts look good on paper but I never worked them willingly. Other people thrive on the compressed work week.

Is your partner willing to sacrifice every single weekend to your work schedule? You will not be available for weddings and other important events which are typically held on Saturdays. If weekends are your regular work week, how easy would it be to trade away a Saturday if you occasionally needed one?

I get that you're feeling very stagnant where you are and desperate for a change of scene. Maybe this job works for a couple of years before you start wanting more normal hours, or maybe this lasts until your child is in school.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

I work 12 hours every Sunday and Monday. It has kept me from having to ever use daycare and I get to basically be a stay at home mom. But working every Sunday means I only have one weekend day with my husband and daughter and I miss a lot of activities. It's been worth it for me, but I think after a while working Friday, Saturday and Sunday you could become burnt out.

I would totally do it if my youngest was my only child. With my other boys, we are at some type of sporting event every weekend. But the money is great.
