Weekend option position

I don't work weekends but used to at another facility and our hospital has a weekend program. The hospital I worked at you worked every weekend and had to work every other holdiay as well. I did not stay in the program long, too far from home and weekend just did not work for me with my kids and my hobbies. The hospital I work at now, the weekend positions only work holidays if it falls on the weekend. They also get paid for working 32 hours working 24 hours. They are the last to be called off/oncall before pt and perdiem and any extra time they get paid our incentive rate.

Where I work the weekend cadre is either fri/sat/sun or sat/sun/mon. You only have to work on a holiday if it falls on a weekend. You work 36 hrs/week but get paid for 40. (so if you work extra you get time and a half right away). Our critical care unit usually doesn't have enough people on the weekends so they rarely get pulled to other units or sent home.

Our "Baylors" work Sat/Sun and get paid for 36 hours. So if they work an extra weekday they get overtime. Like someone else said they only work a holiday if it falls on a weekend. They don't do on-call hours.

I have been working weekend option in the NICU in Indy for almost ten years and the big boss is looking at making some changes in how things are done. Just wondering who else works weekends and how your unit deals with the following... holidays, on-call hours, time off... Any incite would be great!! Thanks, Mel

Hi Mel, my employer changed the holiday policy when Christmas and New Years Day started occuring during the week, I now have to work one of the above holidays in addition to my regular weekend schedule. I'm now also required to select a summer holiday (Mem. Day or 07/04) and a fall holiday (Labor Day or Thanksgiving). They don't consider that people who work a weekend program do so because of weekday obligations. I can understand the Weekday staff not wanting to work all those holidays but they aren't required to pick up a Sat or Sun when we have work additional hours during the week, so we switch a weekend day for a weekend day. I work 5 weekends on with the 6th weekend off, 2-12hour shifts , paid for 36, no on call.
