We tell the student nurses to run for their lives."

Nurses General Nursing

Published

"Nurses may constitute the most dissatisfied professions in the United States today. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, slightly more than two-thirds of registered nurses (69.5 percent) reported being even "moderately satisfied" with their jobs. By contrast, 85 percent of workers in other industries and 90 percent of professional workers are satisfied with their jobs."

Do you guys have any clue what the job market is like out there? Perhaps you've heard of the recession? Thousands of layoffs? High unemployment rates?

I think that a lot of people here know exactly how the job market is. It's just that there's a lot that are not going to sugarcoat the reality.

Believe me, I'm not one of these students who wants sugarcoated reality either.

All I'm asking is that people be realistic about everything, including the alternatives, before they tell us to jump ship.

I believe that we should always be willing to identify and admit valid problem areas in our lives, careers, relationships, etc. At the same time we also need to define options and solutions. If I don't have an option or solution at the ready I seek opinions and responses like those found in this format. Somehow it all sorts out.

I left nursing but will admit that nursing helped me to get to where I am today (in a roundabout sort of way). I have tremendous respect for nurses in general but struggle with some issues of nursing culture that are extrapolated to the profession. I am an overachieving heterosexual male and found that my ESTJ (Myer's Brigg Personality Type) did not fit well in the traditional nursing stereotype. So I left nursing.

Yet I have a connection to nursing that brings me back to Bulletin Boards like these. I have earned that right after years of nursing practice, advanced education, certification and "tons" of money spent supporting same. Perhaps I come here to bring closure to some issues or heal some wounds.

I do appreciate all honest responses. Some responses I value and some I reject. But I read them all.

lizz...

I totally feel where your coming from. All we want to do is earn a decent living doing something we love/like.

I know what Im getting into...I work as a CCT at a level1 trauma center.....I work very closely w/ nurses, dr. and residents. I have seen all the drama. I just keep' on smilin'.

But, it is very frustrating when one is trying to have a postive attitude r/t nursing and all you hear is how "bad" things are, or wait till you start working, you'll see......

You're right, I will see. But let me decide what is "bad". Give the NG a "chance to step thru the door before you slam our fingers in it.........;)

HBS, you are one of the nicest, most considerate people I have ever seen on this board.

I couldn't remember what my Myers Briggs score was, so I took the test on this site:

http://similarminds.com/myers-briggs.html

I came out with an ENTJ (or Extroverted-Intuitive-Thinking-Judgemental as opposed to ISFP, or Introverted-Sensing-Feeling-Perceiving). What do you think the perfect combination would be for a nurse?

I would feel uncomfortable rendering that information without more validated research but I think you will find the following links helpful in that regard:

Hope that helps and thank you very much for the kind remarks. Very encouraging.

Thank You! My wife and I have been together for 21 years now. We dated for four years then married. She is a Saint (has to be to put up with my Super "Type A" personality). We have two wonderful children. My family is the very best thing that has ever happened to me.

Yeah, kellilou3, thanks for that link. I just found out why hospital nursing stresses me out so much. I'm supposed to be an artist.

:roll Definitely not a good way to make money though.
