We are still deciding...

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hi everyone!

So after spending all summer filling out applications, I finally got a call back! I was soooo excited! I went to the interview and it was great! The nursing recruiter told me about the salary, when the next orientation started and knowing that I had job, how much time I would need to quit. So I thought it was going well! She introduced me to one of the managers I would be working with (it's a float position) and he told me if it was up to him he would give me the job on the spot! She said she had another person to interview, but she would get back to me the beginning of the next week. So my I interview was on 7/26, so I called on 7/31 and she said they would give me a call when they decided. Then I got no response all week. So on Monday (8/6) I called again, and I got her secretary. I told her I was calling to follow up. She put me on hold for a second and then came back and said "the nursing recruiter is busy right now, but she wanted to tell you they are still deciding and will get back to you as soon as they make a decision". I said thank you, and that was that. I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket... But currently this is the only egg I have lol. Im still filing out applications though. Today makes 13 days since my interview. So I'm I out of the running or is there still hope?! I really want this job! I'm hoping I'm just being paranoid and they are currently doing a background check or something. With the job I have now, I believe it took about 10 days for them to offer me the job. So what do all of you think?

I'm in kinda the same situation. I got a call from a hospital I applied to and they scheduled me for an interview. The day before, I got a call saying that the recruiter had a family emergency and they were postponing the interview until she got back. I called a week later and spoke with the recruiter and she said that she might have to go back out of town and was waiting for a call but was planning on calling to reset the interview for this week. No word since. From what I've heard, it takes sometime a couple of weeks for them to make a decision on applicants. Until then I think all we can do is wait and keep looking.

13 days isn't that long for a hospital to make a decision. One of the new nurses who just started on our unit waited over two months between her interview and receiving a job offer. She had to wait that long because of a hiring freeze. Our census was low (whole hospital) and so upper management said "no more new hires" until census recovered. It happens pretty often during periods of low census. Perhaps your hospital is also on a temporary hiring freeze and has to wait for that to be lifted before they can offer you a position. Good luck.

It's not unusual to wait that long. Keep hoping. It might work out.

One thing I am seeing now is that the systems for hiring are not as fast and efficient as they used to be. It's as if the necessary resources and processes have been diminished over the past few years when there were very few jobs to be filled. Now that the hiring has picked up a bit, the people and systems involved don't seem to be quite ready for it.

Good luck to you!
