Is there anyone else on here who is waiting for a response from WCCCD's nursing department? I applied June 30, and am going slightly crazy waiting for my acceptance/denial e-mail! Let's get to know each other, hopefully we'll be classmates!

Has anyone completed the medical requirements yet? I'm asking because I've confirmed through the March of Dimes that the only shots I can have are the Flu shot and the Tdap and of course the drug screening. Everything else will have to wait. If you have had them completed, how long did the process take?

I've gotten most of mine done because it was a requirement for the Rad Tech program. (I have chosen to leave Rad Tech program and go into nursing program with Wayne county). I got my MMR shots, Hepatitis B shots, and TDap shots for free at Herman and Keifer. Then I got my varicella titers and rubella done at Concentra.

Thanks Kadambari! I figured they did. I tried to call but I couldn't get anyone on the phone. I've been trying to do some research to see if I could get the immunizations while I'm pregnant. I've been getting contradicting information.
It was a lifesaver for me because the MMR shots and Hep B shots are the most expensive.

Herman and Keifer has alot of dead end numbers that lead you to nowhere. Here is one that I call (313) 876-4184.

Sometimes they can be a bit rude when you call but the actual nurses working there are very helpful, and if you get there early you don't have to wait forever.

Are they dated before September 1st?

Did they give you paperwork the same day or did you have to wait for anything? My doctor said I'm going to have to do it as soon as I deliver. I told her it had to be dated between September 1st and October 31st and she said they should except that with a note.

I got it done over the summer. But I can't get another MMR shot or Hep B shot again. It's still in my system

When I got the MMR shot and Hep B shot they gave me a form verifying that I got it done before I left the clinic.

Can someone give us a overview of what happens the first semester??

I am concerned about the math proficiency test we must have at the end of each semester. Is the math portion really tricky or do they make it simple??

Regarding the math competency exam:

This exam is administered prior to every semester (Except summer) to all nursing students. It will assess your ability to solve nursing related math calculations (IV drip rates and times, medication dosages, titrations, etc) It is NOT difficult at all because all students must complete HSC 100 (Medical Math) and all exam questions are covered in this book (So please save your book as you will need it to review some topics),

I believe 1st year nursing students must get a 90% to pass. And when youre in your 2nd year you have to get 100% (Within 3 attemps, that is).

You just have to be careful with your math becuase sometimes one simple mistake can change the entire answer and then you have to RETAKE the entire exam ( andif you have toretake, its a different test --just FYI)

Anyways its good to take that HSC 100 Class and learn somthing from it and keep the book.

the school puts so much emphasis on math/dosage calcualtions because you will need it in the clinical settings of course. And its a part of the NCLEX Exam as well.

An example question:

Phenytoin (Dilantin), 18,000 mg PO, is ordered to be given through a nasogastric tube. Phenytoin is available as 8,000 mg / 12 mL. How much would the nurse administer?

ANSWER:

18,000 mg

__________ X 12 mL= 27 mL

8,000 mg

It has to be completed by the 1st 7.5 weeks. Thats a requirement. If not, you will have to sit out of the program until you do complete it but your seat is not guaranteed to be saved for you when you do come back.

If you havent completed it already, you should know that it is offered every 7.5 weeks so you can go ahead and sign up for it in October and get it out of the way. And since its considered a nursing class, its only 7.5 weeks.

Believe me if I were you I would do it as soon as you can instead of waiting to take it with your first batch of nursing classes. You will have enough studying as it is.

Another class that MUST be completed during the first semester is Nutrition.

Med Math and Nutrition must be completed by Semester 1

Patho must be completed by Semester 2

Lifespan and Sociology must be completed by Semester 3

English2 and American Govt must be completed by Semester 4

You can take majority of these classes online since they are offered that way you wont have to worry about going to the campus and online you can work on you own pace.

Plus the summer semester is an excellent time to try and play "catch up" and take what ever you need and get it out of the way.
