Ways I have heard Metoprolol pronounced...by medical personnel.

Published

Was on the phone with a nurse today getting a pt's med list and she said one of the meds the pt was on was "MET-rol-pol"...Uh...Metoprolol?? "Yeah, okay." Oh brother!

So what have you heard meds called - by MEDICAL personnel...who theoretically should know better?

I have difficulty with some medication names. One that I hear mispronounced is Risperdal, they will say, "Risperidol" and I'm thinking No, that would be Risperidone.

I am so guilty!!!! I have done this more than once & as soon as I do...

I know the correct way but for some reason the brain & mouth does not always work together! I am so glad I came up on this thread because I am terrible at pronouncing many many drugs! It makes you feel so stupid. I just about die when I have to call a Dr or give report & look down & see something like Trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole!!!!! :imbar Why the crap can they not just write Bactrim :lol2: I am just so glad I am not alone in this! & while I am at it my spelling is horrible too!:p

My poor mom is one of the smartest nurses I know, and has 10+ years experience, but she is terrible with saying med names...in fact, regular english can give her fits (I don't mean that to be funny, sometimes her mouth just will not form big words...always has been that way)

I used to try and correct her, thinking it would help. I didn't want her to look uneducated in front of others. But I realized I was making her feel worse, and far more self conscience by doing so. So, I let her say em how she wants. I might say a few off myself ;)

And how about Daavocet?

I can just see it now, "Daahling, be a good little luv and bring me some Daavocet."

One of my professors (Dr) who taught us Cardiology said ventricle as 'Vun-thru-kel' and SA Node as snort. I kid you not!!!

one of the rn's on my unit (english is not her first language) was writing up discharge home instructions for a patient and i glanced over to her computer and saw that she had written for the pt to "avoid insect drugs". so i inquired...

what are you writing up there?

the patient needs to avoid insect drugs like advil, ibuprofen

oh you mean nsaids, non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs??

oh yeah yeah

let me help you on this one....

I used to work with a nurse who insisted on pronouncing protonix as proto-nix. It used to drive me nuts because even though the Dr's and everybody else pronounced it pro-ton-ix she kept up with the ol proto-nix.

I had an instructor who talked about having semen in healthy ears. The whole class laughed at once but she denied it..
