Hi everyone, I am transferring to WSU this Winter and was wondering if anyone could tell me about their nursing program. I was wondering if they base admissions on GPA if so what has the cutoff been. Do they weigh in other factors for admissions and does all prereq's have to completed before you apply. Thanks!

Hi there!
I'm finishing up my first semester in Wayn'es nursing program so the admissions process is still fresh in my mind, and I can answer any questions you may have.
All prereqs must be completed or in progress before you apply-- they won't even consider your application if they aren't complete. The application deadline is in March, and you have to submit transcripts showing all prereqs completed by June 1st. They only accept students for fall starts so if you wanted to start fall of '09 you only have this coming up winter semester to finish any outstanding prerequisites. If you have more to complete than you'll be able to take this coming semester the soonest you could start is fall of '10.
Wayne has competitive admissions based on GPA in your prerequisite classes. For this fall they're adding back in the personal statement (my class didn't have to do it for some reason) and they also lump students into groups for admissions. This gives preference to students who complete some/all prereqs at Wayne and preference to students who have not repeated any prerequisite courses. The admissions groupings are available on the college of nursing's website http://www.nursing.wayne.edu
I'm in the traditional program (and you'd be in this one too since you don't have a bachelors) and this past fall there were 48 of us admitted.
It was bananas hard to get in this past year because they only admitted 48. Fall 2007 they admitted 88 so they accepted about half as many students. I don't know how many they will be able to admit for subsequent classes but I think it's going to stay around the 50ish mark due to funding. That would be something to ask about at an info session.
The lowest GPA admitted fluctuates with the applicant pool. I think the lowest GPA admitted this fall for the traditional program was about 3.7 but they would be able to tell you that for sure at an information session. I know the lowest GPA admitted to the second degree program was a 3.8. Info sessions are once a month in the Cohn building and I recommend you go. The schedule of sessions is up on the college of nursing website. The next one is Tuesday Dec 16 at 10 if you can make it (and I'll be there taking my patho final! Eeep!) They're super friendly and nice in the office of student affairs and will help with any questions you may have or let me know if I can help you out with anything! :redpinkhe
PS-- What classes did you sign up for this winter at Wayne?

Hi Wayne State Katie Thank youn so much for all of your info. It is really helpful. I signed up to take Chemistry 1000, but I'm not sure if I can take Chemistry 1020 without having completed 1000 first Chem 1020 &1030 is what they want for the program. I also signed up to take an Oral Communications class (Speech Basically), because I have never taken it before. I am a transfer student and they took all of my classes that's required for their nursing program yah! If I could take Chem 1020 next semseter without having to take Chem 1000 first then I could take Chem 1020 in the summer and maybe I could apply for next fall. What do you think?
If you're taking chem 1000 this winter you're in for a treat because maguire is teaching it! He's an awesome prof. You can sign up to take 1020 without 1000 first though and that would be faster.....especially if you have a basic chemistry background from high school you should be fine in 1020. If you've never taken chem before then you may want to consider doing 1000 purely because Maguire is awesome and good at explaining things (I had him for an upper level chem class)
My fav chem prof is teaching 1030 this winter too, but you'd need to be done with 1020 before you can enroll in 1030 so the earliest you could possibly take 1030 is summer semester '09 which is after the application deadline for fall 2009 start...
Since you still have to take both of those chem classes the earliest you could apply for is fall 2010 But the good news is you can spread out the more difficult classes and really concentrate on getting As to bolster your GPA. I've been following your posts and I"m really rooting for things to go well for you at WSU!

Hi again Wayne State Katie, Thanks for the words of encouragement. That's what I was wondering if I could take Chem 1020 instead of 1000. But what I was trying to figure out is on the site it states that applications are due on March 1st and completion of Pre Req's must be submitted by June 1st, If I were to take Chem 1020 in January and be registered for Chem 1030 for summer will they consider my application. On the site it doesn't list Chem 1030 as one of the Pre req's. So that's what I was considering. Because I have been rejected twice and I am really ready to start the nursing program soon.
Hey Wayne State Katie or anyone is anyone fimiliar with Mary Frances Barber she teaches Chemistry1020 @ WSU. I was wondering if she was a good teacher, or is her class difficult. Thanks for any input.
Unfortunately 1030 does have to be completed for your application to be considered at WSU. I just double checked the website and it's still a prerequisite. They won't consider your application for fall admissions unless you submit proof that you've completed it and have a grade for it by June 1st. That's the only bummer about once a year admissions...Wayne won't consider you "even if you only have one prerequisite left" (yes that's really in the FAQ). You can go talk with someone in the office of student affairs or ask about it at an info session but they'll tell you the same thing.
OR
you could attempt to take chem 1020 and chem 1030 in the same semester this January. 1020 is a prereq for 1030 and to do so would be crazy but you could maybe talk the chem department into granting you an override-- that's the only way you'd make the cut off for fall '09 entry. It would be doable if you're good at chemistry--just be prepared to be busy with just those 2 classes!
I'd start emailing now--- Dr Santalucia who does orgo/biochem (1030) is my favorite chem prof! He's hard as hell but you do learn a lot and if you explained the situation he might be willing to work with you and help get you into 1030 w out taking 1020. Let us know if they'll let you do that this winter.
Barber's a pretty good prof. She usually has you do a lot of "busy work" that most chem profs won't assign like quizzes/online stuff all the time through blackboard. I haven't personally taken her but I've heard good things from those who have had her.

Hey Wayne State Katie, I have never had Chem before but I am a really hard worker and learn very fast. How do I attempt to get an overide to take both I am willing to try just about anything to be able to apply for Fall. I had a touch up with Chemistry by taking anatomy classes. Do they usually grant overides or since I am a transfer student is there any other considerations. You are such an informative person and I appreciate all the feedback you have given me.
I'd probably attempt to register for both 1020 and 1030-- see if it will let you add both classes through pipeline. If you can successfully register for both I'd email Santalucia and explain your situation. Say you want to take his class to meet an application deadline and is he ok with that (he's a great guy and I can see him being very willing to help you out/work with your situation). If the department later tries to remove you from the class (they probably won't) you'd have him in your corner saying that he OK'ed it (assuming he did) and I would think that would be sufficient.
If it won't let you register for 1030 and pops up with a "you don't have permission to take this because you're missing a prerequisite" or something like that then you'll have to go through the department. Again I'd try emailing and getting a hold of Santalucia first to see if he's ok with it. He'd probably know who you have to contact about getting department permission/ an override. Hope it works out!

I took a Chem 1 and 2 in high school. Do I still need to retake it at Wayne State if I were to transfer there?
Yup you do. They don't accept high school classes. Unless you took advanced placement chemistry in high school and scored a 3 or higher on the advanced placement exam Wayne won't give you credit. You need the specific courses they list for the program too (I had taken several higher level chem classes, but I had to go back and take the lower level chemistry that they wanted for the program. They're also very adamant that the 1030 if you're transferring it in has to be the exact class that has both organic and biochemistry--not just organic). Wayne's nursing website has a list of what transfers from local CCs and universities too so you know which class to sign up for if you're taking the prereqs elsewhere.
Hope that helped!
